Will O pull scholarship offers in order to bring in more linemen?
We have quite a few players either offered or committed for positions that are not ones of need (like DB). Does O clear some of those guys out in order to bring in more OL and DL?

Doubtful. That's a solid way to piss off kids, schools, and their coaches.

re: Will O pull scholarship offers in order to bring in more linemen?
He needs to find some blue chip running backs somewhere too because that's something he'll be complaining about next year.

"We need RBs, RBs and more RBs" is what he'll be saying. The current guys on the roster and what we have now are decent but not the type of guys who are going to be at the top of the SEC like we're use to seeing. Not really sure how this is being overlooked and why it's difficult for LSU of all places to go out and get an elite RB this class.

TBH, I'm not really a fan of this class he's putting together. It looks like they have a lot of guys who could turn out to be an all-american type but they're project players. Regardless what anyone on here will say, that error goes down when you're recruiting 4-5* prospects due to how high their athletic ceilings are. Nobody throw those stupid arse numbers out at how many 3* get drafted compared to 5* when they only have about 20-30 5* each year compared to hundreds maybe thousands of 3*. If you were looking at it from a per capita standpoint...you have a lot of NFL talent with 5*-4* rosters.

I personally don't think defensive line depth is as bad as it's showing this year. We're just unfortunate there with 1 guy not qualifying, several suspensions/injuries. O-line though, that's another story. Grimes has failed to recruit and develop enough proper talent here consistently. You can say attrition has hurt it but that's partly Grimes fault too for not recruiting the guys who can be maintained here. Be it they lack talent or just don't fit LSU. His lines fall apart in big games which is why I'm still confused as to how he's been here so long. That's the biggest need right beside RB that so far has not been addressed in this class. I'd put QB and dline next in line and I only put QB there because you should be taking a QB in every class until one looks like you hit gold his freshman year. I think Brennan will be a good one but I also believe it will take him about 3 years before the light comes on.

I've read this a bunch on this board, but nobody every puts any names in there that they think are realistic for this year.

So, who do you want?

We may be in it with Joiner, but there's really no telling with that guy. But I really don't expect more than Curry, Provens and maybe Joiner.

The 2019 RB class looks like it's going to be like the 2018 WR class, where we might not even be able to take all of the quality kids that would probably like to come here.

I agree with this. Plus we already have 4 true defensive linemen already committed. Yeah, I know, Rosenthal might move to OT, but for now he's listed as a DT and adamant that's what he wants to play, so I'll play along with that.

It's not so much pulling an offer as just don't contact the athlete much. Most guys these days want to feel the love and if they feel someone else is giving them more attention and feel like they are being ignored or taken for granted more than likely they will jump ship.

re: Will O pull scholarship offers in order to bring in more linemen?
He'll most likely stop contacting several guys in order to pull in guys in the trenches. We need at least one JUCO offensive lineman.

We don't need any more RBs in this class. Barring injury, we should come back with four starting offensive lineman and anybody who takes over left tackle can't be any worse than Malone. With an improved OL Brossette, CEH, Curry, and Provens should have a good year. We can manage until the loaded 2019 class gets here.

LSU needs to stack up on some of these Louisiana WRs though. We don't have any of the top 4 in the state, That is ridiculously unacceptable.

re: Will O pull scholarship offers in order to bring in more linemen?
Agree totally on no rb unless Provens are Curry Decommit.

I do not like this rb class nationwide. It is weaker this year than some years in the past and next year is a much stronger year for rb (nationwide and instate both).

We should have taken 2 last year and they wanted 2 last year.
(Jmo- Mishandled T. Carter and T. Eintiene. Spell)
Also mishandled S. Guidry and the wr recruiting last year (I think that is part of why Jaluke and Craig are no longer here)

With 8 scholarships left my thoughts are

2 WR for a total of 4 this class.

2 CB for a total of 4 DB.

2 OT for a total of 5 OL.

1 DE (a 3 4 DE not another Buck linebacker)

1 DT.

I think the most common tactic is to "back off" and let them drift away. Not pull offers.

"Not showing love" is not always a mistake. Better be in communication with the other kids, and better have confidence in your confidence [of signing]. But all that's nothing new.

Agree. the only great recruiter seems to still be raymond.O was a good one but with him as head coach not gonna be able to recruit full-time. The rest seem to be Average at best. i think he needs to let grimes and pete jenkins go at the end of the season and bring in some guys that can recruit and coach the o-line and d-line. Hope we finish strong in recruiting but with this season not ending well i'm not getting my hopes up.

Rb doesn't matter if you don't have a line.

We need quality OL/DL right now. Biggest reason the team is being pushed around.

I agree.

That is why I have 4 out of the last 8 as lineman.

We need wr also and should not let a strong La. Wr class go elsewhere.

Jmo.

Every year needs at least 5 OL.

Let's assume you're wrong for sake of argument.

If you go 4, EVERY YEAR - and you redshirt every single one, you only have 12 scholarship linemen available for a game, assuming no one goes pro early and you have no attrition.

And if you don't redshirt every single one, then that means you're playing true freshmen on the OL.

So, I think when rational people look at it - you should be taking 5 more years than not. If you don't, you've got problems if guys go pro, you have any attrition or you don't want to play true freshmen.

re: Will O pull scholarship offers in order to bring in more linemen?
I'd like to see us take too many OT, convert them to G if necessary, instead of the other way around. If you have to choose, and with recruiting you sometimes do, that's the way to go. UGA (and Bama) usually go for 3 OTs a cycle if there's enough with talent out there. And they probably avg around 5 total OL a year, meaning 2 OGs and 3 OTs. It works for them.

Converting OTs to G or C, when you avg. 2 OTs a year is crazy to me.

Problem is, you can only "catch up" so much per year. If you're playing catch up with any group with 3 or more per position it's tough. OL are the toughest, you have 5 and OTs are a specialist. So if we went out and got 8 in '18 we'd be caught with pants down 3-4 yrs from now OR another group would suffer over the same time period, or both.

Agree.
Recruit more Tackles and convert them if you need to not the other way around.

Yeah, so in three years you can write...

Not sure about this. We simply don't have the line talent in Louisiana. That means we have to find most of them out of state. Our coaches recruit regions more than they recruit positions. So Grimes has to depend on other coaches to pluck linemen from their regions.

I'm sure the coaches cross over to recruit their position too. I'm just saying it's not so clear cut.

This board has lionized Corey Raymond, and I'm sure he is an excellent recruiter, but we've had great defensive backfields, almost without interruption, for 40 years. That's because we're loaded with that type of athlete here in Louisiana. I think that Patrick Peterson, Tyrann Mathieu and Mo Claiborne, coming on the heels of one another, made LSU a DB destination. Along with Raymond's recruiting prowess, these things have combined to make LSU DBU.

On the oline we're missing two of those three factors - even IF Grimes is a good recruiter.
