With his track record of sending players to the draft during his tenure at Alabama, there seems little doubt about Nick Saban’s ability to produce and prepare players for the NFL. But the trade of [Trent] Richardson certainly boils up some doubts about Crimson Tide running backs of recent vintage. In the past three seasons, Alabama has had two first-rounders (Richardson and former Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram) and a second-round pick (Eddie Lacy). There are legitimate questions about New Orleans’ choice of Ingram, who has only 10 starts in two-plus seasons and has averaged just 3.8 yards, in 2011. Lacy hasn’t gotten off to the fastest start in Green Bay and is dealing with a concussion. And now Richardson has been traded despite having been the third overall pick in 2012… [Glen] Coffee retired after one season in San Francisco….

“One thing we’ve got to remember is that (Saban) always has great offensive lines, and that helps his backs,” said one area scout. “And, truth be told, with the way Nick uses his backs, he probably rubs some tread off the tires. But, hey, no excuses, we’ve got to do a better job of (evaluating) these guys.”

If Jeremy Hill can stay out of trouble and does not have a major injury, he will have a better pro career than any of the fore mentioned bama rb's.

The Truth is simple. $abun pushes those kids to the brink. They don't listen to him he simply benches them or worse discards them.
Its perform or else.

When those guys get in the NFL and are paid professionals they are expected to act like it, which includes self motivation. At the NFL level they lack that motivation because $abun is not there forcing it out of them.

They are kinda reaching. You cant judge lacey after 2 games, richardson is a good player who was traded because his former team is tanking.

Ingram just sucks.

Talk about reaching.... I want to see an article on Wisconsin backs since they always seems to finish with 250+ carries each year in CFB

Don't see these great Offensive Linemen doing so wonderfully, either. It slows their development when the threat of a Holding call against them in SEC officiated games is nil.

They don't have a full time steroid dealer in the NFL like they do in Tuscaloosa.

All part of "the process". While we all get aggravated at times with Les for spreading the carries around (sometimes inexplicably), it leaves them with much lower mileage for the next level. So a Ridley or Addai end up having better pro careers than the midget's backs, even though they didn't get nearly the press in college.

This...and his backs are punished everyday, probably more than at most other programs, during practice. i gather his practices are brutal.

Ask any former Nick Saban player if they have any relationship with him after they leave his program. The universal answer is, NO.

Ask the same of Miles players? More often than not, there is a relationship there and he is willing to help, if needed, down the line.

Saban views these kids as commodities to be used for a stated objective.

Miles views many, if not most, of his players as sons.

Say what you want about either man as a coach (and I have been critical of Miles), but if a player does not have a strong father figure in his life, or wants to have a relationship and support of his former coach, Miles is the choice...and it is not even close.

Delta Doc, I agree with your post 100%

As far as running back recruits are concerned I don't think its that damning. He basically says that Saban's running backs are overvalued on draft day because of a great O line.

Didn't Adadi play for Saban as well?

It sounds like it makes sense to say fewer carries in college helps players in the pros, but plenty of RB's have gotten more carries in college and done fine in the NFL. Adrain Peterson had more carries in college than Richardson.

Also its not just Alabama RB's, lots of their guys are getting to the pros nicked up, needing surgery early on.

All this. Bama has a great OL every year so of course it's a gamble taking a RB from that offense, but that doesn't mean they can't produce a great one. TR was good on an awful team, he'll be a star in Indy.
