Why 85? What was the reason for that specific number of scholarship limits?

a compromise between the big schools (with money) and the mid size schools. it was really an attempt to limit the bigger schools who would sign every quality player they could, some to just keep away from other schools. ditto on the 25 per year. together, those 2 rules have meant more to parity than all else combined. LSU could afford 150 schollies, MSU couldn't. also, not every school gives the full compiment due to financial reasons.

I think when Title IX hit there was a percentage reduction in Schollys for all men's sports, so the 85 has to do with that and whatever the number was before. It's why baseball has 11.75 and T&F has 12.69.

yeah i thought it was about the equality thing. schools have to give girls the same amount of athletic schollys as they do guys. this is why girls soccer at LSU gets schollys and guys soccer doesnt. i think because of the numbers needed for football that this rule is unfair. it should be that schools must offer the same number of sports teams that give athletic schollys. there just isnt a girls sport that has a roster size even close to comparable to football IMO.

Nope thats a different rule. If you play football and any other sport, you count on the football #'s.

Bahr had a kid on a swimming scholarship that couldn't swim......

that is correct. and the less affluent schools couldn't keep up. the number 85 is not magic if you increase your female scollies. the line was drawn for financial reasons.

Imagine a school like Texas having unlimited scholarships with their recruiting base. Just imagine the top 50 kids in the state of Texas each year with 90% of them going to Austin.

Nebraska's squad numbered near 200 players during the walk-on program's heyday, enough for Osborne to run four full practice stations. Sure, most of the walk-ons were practice meat, but a few blossomed into stars.

I agree it was the Bear's doings at Bama that brought it on. They'd show up even at road games with 130 players.

Hell, it wasn't illegal and other schools could have done it.
