At least I started a pretty decent thread for once.

decent, yes. But it still appears you haven't accepted there's tons of evidence that proves not only is Saban not the best recruiter, he may not even be top 5.
Try this on for size: Take Saban's 4 best recruiting classes... ever, anywhere.
Take his highest average, whether it be Rivals, Scout, whatever. Curve it to the highest ranting he can be.
Then take the last 4 years of Carroll, Meyer, Miles, Brown, and Stoops. Average JUST their last 4 classes.
You might not like what you see.
Saban is a excellent recruiter, definitely a top
5-7 recruiter in my opinion. But to say he's the best, or to have a "pretty damn good argument as to why he's not the best" because he supposedly won two recruiting titles is nothing more than an opinion.
There are quite a few ESPN.Lemming, etc., who tell you a 24 player class can be MUCH better than a 30 player class anyday-in other words, man per man, LSU's classes was better, and some think LSU's class is still better.
Just look a UF and USC. They sign half as many and have sick classes all the time, more than LSU, Texas, and Alabama.
And I disagree with the assessment of Pete Carroll offensively. While I willgo ahead and recant my opinion of his offensive "genius", he certainly is a great offensive mind.
He turned USC around in one year, got the right QBs in his system, implemented a a pro set offense that the NFL scouts drooled over and simply took over the PAC 10 overnight.
He's got to be good in order to do what he's done. Urban Meyer OTOH has been successful everywhere he has gone, and is more successful
that USC along the way. You should review the thgings he did at Utah in 2004.
I have it Meyer, Carroll, Miles, Brown, Saban, Stoops, and then the rest.

That is certainly news to a lot of folk in the college football world.

DA. I'm not with you on the Pete Carroll thing. He enjoys several advantages. He owns Southern California... and then has the resources of the area he's in... the CHICKS in the area he's in. I dunno man. It's a whole lot easier to get a kid to "come to Hollywood!" than it is to get him to "come to Alabama!". Just my opinion.
ok but obviously even USC can be a mediocre program without a good recruiter/head coach in place.... as they were before Carroll got there.
he owns So Cal but its not like he doesnt have competition in state and out for those players. Cal, UCLA, and Arizona St, etc.. those are some pretty decent programs.
and if Carroll only picked kids out of So Cal he wouldnt have a very good team. He goes every where and gets kids. thats one of the reasons he's one of the best IMO.

you said he was an offensive genius who surrounded himself with great defensive minds. The last time he coached offense was at Pacific in 1983 and he runs the USC defense. So, you refuse to admit you got it all backwards?

Pete Carroll fricked up USC's offense and ran off Norm Chow by trying to coach it and the proceeded to hire two retards to try to run it, who proceeded to kill off an immesnse amount of talent for 4 years...

what about the shite i heard where some USC fans say Petey laid down the law to Chow after year one and made him conform his offense to Petey's wishes which ultimately lead to the great successes?

Relations between Pete Carroll and Norm Chow deteriorated over time. Carroll resented how Chow always got credited with the success of the offense and quarterbacks winning the Heisman Trophy. He worried recruits would think the offense would fall apart if Chow ever left.
On top of this, Lane Kiffin and Chow barely spoke and had at best a strained and sometimes hostile relationship. Remember the argument during the 2004 Orange Bowl practices in Florida?
Chow resented the way Carroll increasingly meddled with the offense. Many times, Carroll said, ``This isn't the BYU offense'' or said he intervened midway through the 2001 season to ``fix'' the offense.
Things reached a head in January of 2005. Carroll, Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian met in Mobile, Ala., at the Senior Bowl and talked about a plan to bring Sarkisian back from the Raiders, where he was an assistant and kick Chow into the job of assistant head coach.
They also discussed removing playcalling duties from Chow.
wow, that was fricking retarded. You have any good Kiffin vs Chow stories?
Posted on 5/13/09 at 11:13 am to Maximus
not really. My roommate works for the team and basically says everyone hated Kiffin other than Carroll. I can only be glad Bates is ere and the Kiffin/Sark shite is over. Hopefully Carroll can keep his ego in check and on the correct side of the football

frick Pete Carroll, he gets all of southern California. Might as well have a whole country to himself.
Don't look now but they are getting some competition from UCLA.
Last year, UCLA signed 7 players from California rated 4 star or higher....USC.....9 players. I believe UCLA also stole a couple.
