Why does LSU have such a problem with recruiting running backs? Seems like every 4 or 5 years we get lucky. Any ideas out there?

What makes you think our RB recruiting is troublesome?

It’s been a hot minute since we had a big time (2) RB class but hopefully 25 will put that layoff to rest

Not sure what you want exactly. Clyde was a massive success, TDP and Emery were both very highly rated, Armoni Goodwin was highly coveted, Trey Holly is the states all time leading rusher and Kaleb Jackson has a shot to be elite.

Running back is one position I don't be worried about for LSU. The great state of Louisiana keeps that.

True but it has been mediocre since Clyde left.

Would not say mediocre. Has it been star worthy? No

I wish TDP would have lost the 15 pounds at LSU that he did in the NFL.

He was good at LSU but could have been really great with the weight loss. His mindset made him a tough runner in the open field, not his weight.

This NFL preseason run was star caliber

As long as Kelly keeps building that oline depth and talent, they’ll eventually start to come.

I don’t agree with this assessment. I think we have top drawer running backs. We have had some bad luck with injuries…really bad luck. And, we just haven’t used them in the traditional way the last few years. For instance last year, the QB got a lot of the rushes.

RB isnt a major position of need to anyone anymore. You have a solid line, you'll have a decent running game.

Its all about the passing game and utility today.

The transition from Les to O hurt, as would any coaching change. O struggled with star chasing, and we missed out on some local/regional talent in the O to Kelly transition. Now that we can legally pay for players and have coaching stability, we should see things settle down. LSU will balance resources and purchase suitable RB talent as needed moving forward.

Do yourself a favor. You need to rethink everything you knew about recruiting pre NIL. These kids don't GAF about dream schools, facilities, tradition or relationships anymore, its all about $,$$$,$$$.$$

I believe our recent lack of elite RB has been more to do with coaching than talent. Aside from CEH, our RBs weren't as good since Frank left. This past year wasn't incredible, but it felt more stable than the 2 previous seasons. You can probably attribute Jish Willian's success to Frank's coaching. I think we will continue to see growth at that position.

We’ve just had a tough time finding the right backs to run out of the shotgun and pistol since CEH in 2019. The OL problems since then certainly had an impact. The run game being de-emphasized in our 2019 and 2021 offenses didn’t help RB recruiting, either.

Even though we still operate mostly out of the gun with Kelly and Denbrock, the offense will be a better fit for more backs the more we run 11 and 12 personnel. Once we get that ace blocking TE plugged in and Taylor improves enough to become an average or better blocker, then we should be pretty versatile and run to the strengths of different guys.
