What you're going to start to see is why you bring Bill Polian's son aboard on your staff.

Brian Polian is a talent evaluator. He grew up in that.
LSU is dropping offers to all these FCS All-Americans as they pop in the portal, and that's Polian. Apparently it was Polian who closed Miles Frazier, with Brad Davis' help.
We're going to go around and clean out a good bit of the NFL-caliber talent in some of these smaller schools through the portal, and it's a great time to do it because there are a lot of young star players who ended up in some of these places because of what COVID did to the high school camp circuit and the other talent evaluation tools for college teams.
Having a master talent evaluator like Brian Polian is going to make a colossal difference in blunting the impact from the transition on our recruiting class. I expect we'll hit the transfer portal pretty hard this year and next before we're right back to the point where our recruiting classes are better than anybody's outside of Alabama, and maybe we'll even top what they're doing.
Talent evaluation is the single most underappreciated skill in a college coaching staff. It's the reason you see some of these teams with lesser-rated players crushing supposedly better ball clubs full of 4 and 5 star players. This is about to go from a weakness to a strength.

He’s an underrated coach. He’ll be a HC again soon

I agree, Polian will pay big dividends in recruiting and talent evaluations for this team. This is a guy that has been around pro football all of his life and knows what kind of athletes it takes to build a winner.

Great insight...looks to be underway already and will hopefully yield major results.

He’s coaching ST because it allows him time to evaluate and recruit.
He’s a stud recruiter.

Great Content! I love this hire, I made a Thread about Polian being a West Coast/Hawaii Recruiter but have heard a lot about Polian working the Transfers hard. Where can I find info on who in the portal is being targeted/offered?

Other than this (I haven’t seen teams crushing Alabama and Georgia but maybe I’m wrong), great post

USC, Clemson, Oklahoma and Oregon, all lost multiple games to teams with significant talent deficits this year.

Historically, WE crush Georgia. Which is why the SEC better watch out.
We can’t say shite about Bama other than one real beatdown, but that should get better, too.

I'm talking about the Iowa States and Baylors beating the Oklahomas and Texases, and the Utahs beating the Oregons. Even the Kentuckys beating the Floridas.
Alabama and Georgia haven't had it happen to them quite as often, I'll grant.

Polian must be a kid in a candy store right now. If they do find a good bit of underrated talent this class could easily be top five. Miles is a perfect example. I’m pretty sure any school in the country would much rather have gotten that kid than a five star tackle coming right out of high school. With the portal and all the underrated talent in the state of Louisiana as well, this could be a really good fit.

Well, we have a lot of holes in the roster to fill. Let’s hope we start to hear about some more transfers coming on visits. I’d love to see them go after the center from Virginia.

Yes, And people need to remember as well that players are being contacted and then convinced into the portal as well. Hence what happened to Rick’s and possibly Boutte coming up. It’s kind of crazy, anyone is free game.

Really good point and great post. I totally agree. It's not all about star gazing. Some programs are able to be consistently competitive without landing top 5 classes. Teams like OK State, Iowa, and Wisconsin are able to compete despite finishing in the 30s or 40s in class rankings. Playing in the Big 12 and Big 10 obviously helps but still, they find a way to win games without rosters loaded with 4 & 5 star players.
Hell Baylor was able to beat OU and win the Big 12 despite finishing in 30s and 40s. Look at how their classes compared over the last 5 years:
2017 - OU 8th - Baylor 40th
2018 - OU 9th - Baylor 29th
2019 - OU 6th - Baylor 35th
2020 - OU 13th - Baylor 49th
2021 - OU 10th - Baylor 41st

Did polian just get hired?
A lot of Louisiana talent is evaluated very poorly by people at 247 and espn. So I always rate our class higher than the actual rankings do. I’ve seen it too many times to trust them

There are always going to be exceptions, but the fact of the matter is that Oklahoma had won 6 straight Big 12 titles and made the playoffs 4 times with their higher rated recruiting classes. The playoffs spots have been dominated by schools that are at the top of the recruiting rankings. Great recruiting classes aren’t a guarantee of success, but they are almost a prerequisite for contending for a national championship.

Programs need to push back on this bullshite and start fricking up in-conference transfers, and LSU needs to be first in line. Pursue tampering claims across the board, evidence or not. File the week before fall camp and frick up players’ eligibility and ability to play. Let anyone who’s a target know it’s coming if they go to another SEC team. If others are going to play dirty, then bend the rules to suit your own purposes.
LSU also needs to push the SEC to put strict rules on in-conference transfers. Lead the charge, because other teams will follow. It’s only a matter of time before Bama and UGA start poaching from everyone else, as well.

So why don't we just hire his old man Bill Polian as Director of Football Operations? Lets really make this NFLSU.

That may be true, but you know as well as everybody else that when Alabama makes a committable offer to a recruit, the services immediately rate that kid up to a 4-star for the simple reason that if Alabama scouts him as a take he must be a high-level player.
Which isn't a bad bet on their part, but what it means is that if you're a blue-blood program your recruiting classes will always be higher rated than a Utah or a Cincinnati or a Baylor. And yet Utah, Cincinnati and Baylor this past year were a whole lot better than lots of blue-blood programs.
At LSU you can actually have both. You can drink your fill of 5-star and 4-star recruits, but if your coaching staff has great talent evaluators you can also bring in great program players who will stay and develop into a leadership core. That part has completely collapsed at LSU over the past two years as the culture has gone septic.
Polian is going to be a big piece toward rapidly bringing it back while keeping our talent level high.

This isn’t an either-or argument. Just look at our 2019 roster. You had a perfect mix of high 4 star and 5 star talent combined with a few great developmental guys who really popped.
The development angle is about adding depth through a few smart takes to close out classes and targeted transfers.
