Given CBK’s history, this is normal for his classes, late round surges that exceed what MOST teams will do. Not all, but most. That’s what I’m banking on, just like last year.
If LSU had the same amount of players committed as the teams ranked around them and ahead of them, then maybe, but they have more than all but UGA and Miami. A lot more in some cases. As the rest of the classes fill out the gap will widen so LSU adding 2-3 more players won't get them into the final top 5.

Because the others are only adding 5-stars at this point???
I'd think that if others finish their classes with guys they've have as contingency plans then their average will go down.

They're not ranked by averages

so just 2 4 star players is the difference between 5th and 14th?

It's going to be an interesting finish for the HS + Portal Total Rankings. I think the services are going to put more value on high quality transfers than in previous years.
What also helped with the late surge last year is LSU's player evaluation was ahead of the recruiting sites. Once the All-Star camps and games were over, you had a handful of LSU recruits rocketing up through the rankings. (Weeks, Brown, Pimpton, Heard). Heard with the composite bump after ESPN/Rivals finally decided to copy On3/247. I think we see late surges from McBryde, Singleton, Reliford. I also think that Causey and/or Woodland finish as 4*.

Not sure where you are seeing that. They are ranked twelfth on On3 as of today
