re: Update: Odoh in summer school trying to graduate. LSU waiting on eligibility?

Let's see how the LSU media covers this. These questions should all be answered today, but I have my doubts if they will be. Any reporter covering LSU should have a story written today with quotes from: The JUCO coach, UNT athletic director Rick Villareal, and possibly quotes from Johnny Jones and Joe Alleva (generic, since they can't speak about recruits, but could address the general situation).
They could answer the following questions:
Does LSU want him?
Does he want LSU?
Are there allegations of tampering?
Are there academic concerns?
I have a hard time believing that, if LSU wants him and there are no grade issues, that UNT would not release him. LSU plays UNT in the football season opener and recently did a home and home in basketball with them. Why would they jeopardize future games, as well as burning bridges with the JUCO coach?

No new info here, but the Dallas Morning News attributes the comments about restricting LSU directly to new UNT coach Tony Benford:
LINK
quote:
Coleman replaces Hill College center John Odoh, who has been released from the letter of intent he signed during the tenure of former head coach Johnny Jones. Benford said the release will restrict Odoh from signing with LSU, where Jones is now the coach.

This really makes the UNT coach look petty. "We don't want the kid, and he doesn't want to come here, but I won't let him play for the guy that did all the work to recruit him."
Maybe Cowlishaw will pick it up and run with it. He's an LSU fan and a big media guy in Dallas.

If he's released, it doesn't look like an academic issue, only an petty butthurt issue.

They should be all over this. This is the perfect talk radio story. LSU has been very good to UNT over the years and had a great relationship with them. Their AD, Rick Villareal, was an assistant coach at LSU under Curley Hallman. There is no reason for this to be happening.
Now, if LSU doesn't want him or if he has academic issues, then the media should be getting that info out as well.

The academic part sounds like a bullshite cover. Johnny Jones wasn't recruiting any centers for UNT to replace Odoh, so I'm not sure how much has changed in his academic situation in the past two weeks.

This, raising hell is the only way to turn the tide on this.
Sadly, I seriously doubt it will happen

That makes no sense at all.
If he can't meet the academic standard at LSU, why the restriction? He couldn't come here anyway.
If he can't meet the academic standard at UNT, why the restriction? Why a release at all. He'd have to finish up JUCO so why release and/or restrict the relase?

I didn't realize such a conditional release was even possible. Sounds illegal to me, unless Odoh actually agrees to it.

He signed the letter of intent, which is a contract. It's legal, but still a dickmove.

Yeah. I remember when everyone on the Rant wanted to restrict Morgan from going to UCLA. It usually happens in conference or for certain rivals. Not random schools.

This!

villareal was always supportive of jones throughout the hiring process. i feel like they can straighten it out, maybe even schedule another home/home or whatever. not saying odoh is worth another trip to denton but seems like they'd be down to bargain.
eta- assuming jones wants odoh (i have to think he'd like to get him here)

I'm thinking they either want this or want another football game or something.

Serious question: I wonder if it would be considered any kind of NCAA violation or unethical behavior to negotiate for a player's release with financial gain (football or basketball games) or other incentives?

if they think they are getting a football game for a JUCO center....LOL
