How many spots we have left?

Staff will have extra 20 spots they can fill next year with scholarships going from 85 to 105. So it will be hard to tell how many we finish with in this class.

I doubt we ever use 105 scholarships primarily through high school recruiting because those guys buried on the depth chart will probably transfer anyway. If we get to 105, we’ll have to go a lot heavier in the portal. I’d imagine the sweet spot will be 90-95 guys. It’s hard enough to keep everyone happy at 85.

Ffrench to Texas they can’t miss on him after DK

Grabbing a 5* WR in Lockett wasn't enough to make up for Moore? They have to land Ffrench too?

Shoot me straight. Are we even in the race?

Went back and took another look, and I think these are the 12 guys we're going to be focused on between now and ESD (along with keeping our current commits):

Jonah Williams
Solomon Thomas
Jaime Ffrench
CJ Wiley
Jerome Myles
Jourdin Crawford
Jaboree Antoine
Maison Dunn
Jacob Bradford
Walter Mathis
Aidan Anding
Reshad Sterling

Think he just put out a top 5 and commitment date.

Lsu didn't make the cut.

If we get all these kids, we easily number one. I think if we get them all and get Antoine back then there would be some flips somewhere. That’s a ton of DBs but man you’d have it all covered for sure.

Yup, just saw he got Fong'd to Utah. Commit date is Oct 30th, and supposedly he was planning to come in for a game. We'll see.

Personally, I'd rather Wiley, just because of the family connection, but that's just me.

Any of Wiley, Myles or Ffrench would obviously round out a REALLY nice WR class though.

They will not use them all. I don't think we know how many scholarships the staff will use compared to years past on HS is what im saying. If a 4 or 5 star wants to commit to LSU they want turn them away. Also you will lose players every year via portal especially on defensive side next year. Also new defensive staff didn't recruit some of these players on that side of the ball it's all about fit. LSU will lose some to draft, portal, and out of eligibility but that's every school.

Yeah didn't get my hopes up for a player that far away unless he really liked LSU. Not saying I wouldn't want staff to take him but definitely would be concerned about transfer after 1 yr of being home sick, distance, or culture shock.

We've been at 90+ before cuts to 85. I'm not sure why people think we'd settle 90-95. If you're not trying to get to 105 you're selling yourself short. Fill it with tweezers if you don't want NIL headaches but there's no point in leaving 10+ scholarships on the table.

Nothing against the guy—I’m sure he’s a great kid and he’s obviously both a great
football and baseball player—but do not want. When somebody is that good at both football and baseball, you inevitably get both coaches lying to them to get them on campus. Once they’re there, there is no way championship programs can keep all their promises. I’d rather it not be us to get saddled with that reputation. It could hurt both programs.

So do the list of guys in the past 15 years who it didn’t work out for and either wound up transferring or just committing to football. And we barely remember their names. If you’re on an athletic scholarship and play football, you’re on a football scholarship and football, ultimately, takes priority.

Now, with the 20 additional football scholarships, they might not be treated as quite so precious, and football coaches might be more willing to “share.” But if this guy winds up being a starting safety, he’s certainly not missing any fall practices during the season, so he’d miss all of fall baseball. And he’s missing all spring baseball games and practices that conflict with spring football practice.

And with the way Jay recruits and the talent he accumulates—it’s hard for a lot of talented guys who are there every day to find ABs—it’s gonna be hard for Williams to break into the lineup over guys when he’s missing so many reps.

I could be wrong—maybe this guy is so good he is the exception. This is not about this particular player—I’ve never seen him play either sport. He may be Bo Jackson. I feel the same about most 2-sport guys. It just rarely works out, coaches don’t keep promises they may have meant at the time once they get on campus, and guys wind up leaving with a sour taste in their mouths regarding both programs and fail to get fully developed in either sport. It sucks, but if a guy wants to start on a national championship caliber team AND get developed for a future pro career, they almost have to choose early and specialize in 1 sport or the other.

I will certainly concede there are exceptions. I hope for this kid’s sake, if he truly loves both sports, he is one and has a great college career in both wherever he goes. But history tells me he’ll wind up having to either choose one or the other or will wind up transferring to a smaller school whose coaches might be more accommodating.

I don't see Texas missing on Jonah or French.

They are willing to spend whatever it takes to get them.

I see I’ve accumulated quite the number of downvotes. I don’t care, but I will rephrase my orginal post in order to hopefully get some actual engagement with my point. I shouldn’t have said “do not want.” It was hyperbole to underscore my point.
Of course I want all of LSU’s programs to accumulate all the talent they can. But what are you guys expecting it to look like?

Somebody on Moscona this morning said something like “he’s not that good at either, Texas can have him.” Something like that. The typical sour grapes “he wasn’t that good anyway” take. That is not at all my stance—like I said, I have never seen him play either sport, not 1 highlight play or pitch, so this is nothing against this guy at all.

Anyway, Moscona ripped the guy, told him he was stupid, and then said a “scout” or “somebody who would know” or something said that he could wind up being a starting safety in football, miss all of fall baseball, start practicing baseball in January, playing in February, then miss 3 weeks for football spring training, then go back to baseball, and it would only take him about 2 weeks to get back in the groove. Literally said he would be the best player on the baseball team as soon as he walks on the field.

We recruit a lot of talent. Would Jay be cool with the most talented position player on the whole team missing every fall and 3 weeks right in the middle of SEC play? Maybe he would. But, if he’s THAT good, isn’t that a future 1st rounder that kind of owes it to himself to get as many reps as possible to develop himself into as high a pick as possible?

Just tell me what it looks like for a 2-sport guy in 2025 when he goes to a school where both programs want to win a NC every year? What’s the best case scenario for Williams as a 2-sport player in college, no matter which school he chooses? What does that look like?
