With the recent transfer portal losses and BTJ declaring, Turner likely gone (senior bowl), shouldn't we be right around the 85 (+/- 2) limit. I'm sure after spring we'll lose a couple more players but we'll have a chance to grab some too. Am I figuring the numbers right?

No I think we're still like 6-7 over.

Turner getting tossed three yards into the backfield by the Wisconsin nose guard might want to have him reconsidering his career options.

We've lost 27 players to eligibility, upcoming draft and transfer portal. We have 27 h.s. recruits and 4 intakes portal wise. I don know if we were at 85 going into the year. So at most 4 over? I may be wrong on all the numbers so feel free to can me a jack arse.

The thread on the TR has 26 leaving from what I'm seeing. I think we've signed 3 transfers, signed 27 freshmen, have another one committed, so that's 31 incoming. I think that would put us 5 over at the moment. I think it seems the expecation is that we'll get another 1-2 by signing day. That'll be 6-7. Some people also think we'll sign another 1-2 after spring when we reevaluate what our needs are so still need to process 7-9 I think.

I don't think 30 years in college is an option.

Idk but Aydan White and Julian Humphrey need to take 2 spots and would give you 2 legit starting CBs for next year.

His double digit snap infractions this year weren’t anything to sneeze at either. That 4th down getting your teeth kicked in was an embarrassment.

I would've loved to test your theory.

I think your numbers are close. I think when Denver Harris hit the portal, LSU was at 63. Since then Thomas Jr. Turner, Wingo all declared for the draft which puts you at 60. Heard and Brown hit the portal that is 58. Nabers is going to declare so that is 57. LSU has added 28 HS recruits and 4 portal guys, that is +32 and McKinley is a Hard commit. So 57 + 33 puts us at 90. LSU is 5 over the limit right now. So your 4 number was right on it.

I knew I majored in math for a reason. Here is what I came up with (NOT official) for LSU scholarship numbers projected for this fall using TODAY'S info. As you know by the fall, LSU has to have a maximum of 85 scholarship players:

84 - scholarship players currently
9 - seniors with no eligibility left (wow, LSU was a YOUNG team)
14 - scholarship players --> transfer portal
5 - early entry into NFL draft (Cain may belong in SR category but the sum result is the same)
29 - HS signees or committed not signed
4 - transfer portal --> LSU (assuming Ausberry is not on athletic scholarship)

So I come up with projected # scholarship players to be:
84 - 9 - 14 - 5 + 29 + 4 = 89

Seems to me that LSU has a little more "processing" to do or more players have to declare for the NFL draft. If my numbers are even close to correct, all the "take him" comments about players in the portal obviously need to be more than offset with further attrition.

Time to slip in my all-time favorite, almost verbatim, quote which is very relevant here:

{Starship Troopers movie}
Jean Rasczak/Michael Ironside - "Rico, would you like to become squad leader?"
Johnny Rico/Casper Van Dien = "I will until I die or you find somebody better." {last part = processing}

honestly I thought were were getting closer to 80

I'd hate to be the coach, it sucks to cut a player but it's a "business" now, right?

Speaking of "business", thoerictically could we not give a kid a schlorship and set up a NIL deal for him then he could pay his own way with it to get our numbers right? How does the NCAA even govern this shite anymore lol

That 89 number, which is close, includes the 28 HS Signees plus McKinley (Hard Commit) + the Portal signees.

So after spring ball, 4 guys in year 3 or 4 that are 3rd/4th team on depth chart probably will hit spring portal.

Numbers are accurate. Good job. According to Bryan Lazare, when Denver Harris hit the portal, LSU was at 63. Since then, Nabers, Thomas Jr, Turner III, Smith and Wingo all declared for NFL and Diggs and Heard went to Portal. So that is 7 more bringing total to 56.

28 signees + McKinley (Hard Committ) is 29
5 Portal guys

equals 34 to that gets you to 90. As you note, if Ausberry is a PWO, the number is 89 as you note.

Good work.

Well, it is 88 now. I didn't see the Maason Smith NFL draft early entry until after I ran the numbers. Getting closer to 85 but shorthanded at DT. Looks like Guillory, Lee, Washington, and TR FR McKinley assuming he signs. I think Paris Shand would be an option to move inside. But really need to find 1 good, experienced DT...doesn't have to be great...just proven starter.

Just glancing at the portal, a high 3* DT from Mich St Tunmise Adeleye who was rated a high 4* out of HS looks like a possibility. Another is a 4* Jamaree Caldwell out of Houston.
