I agree with Khill715. It's not negativity toward the girls. It is a REALITY that polish and construction needs improvement and that falls on the coaching. The girls are giving it their best which was EVIDENT in their performance on Friday. I know for a FACT that the most successful teams (at this time) focus on arm, hand, leaps and toe positions as an important part of their daily practice. It can be done and makes a difference in routine presentation.

For example, I think KJ has a lot of potential on beam, with high flighty acro skills, overall quite nice attention to most details, and good rhythm. However, her split leaps are sometimes not at 180 degrees, which is a deduction. Why then has her routine changed from last year to this year to include more split leaps? Go compare her beam exhibition against TWU last year to the routine she competed last week. This does not seem like good routine construction.

I don’t think we are being negative towards the girls so much as the coaching and routine construction. Also we will never be in the running for a championship again with 2 fulls in the vault rotation. It’s just not going to score good at nationals and there are too many other teams with 6 10.0 vaults. Oklahoma’s vaults didn’t look great but they are throwing all 10 sv to start the season.

new to gymnastics as a fan. But I started reading this thread about a year ago. And I find this board overly negative in general. Or maybe its highly critical. You say you're not being negative to the girls but sometimes it just goes hand in hand, whether meaning to or not. And yes there are times its straight at the girls. Example someone saying Livvy's a distraction based on no facts but their own opinion.

IMO this board's problem is they are not sold or happy with Jay. But I think its too early for that. Plus his recruiting is top notch.

Basically all of this just needs more time.

I thought last weeks opening meet was much improved from the year before. And lets not lie the judges kind of hosed us. Probably because they knew we beat Utah last year.

Really think this year has some promise.

LauraGBLSU Gymnastics Recruiting Thread by LauraGBI think we will see all 6 10.0 start values at some point in the season. I thought I heard or read somewhere that Chase, KJ, and Bryce have 1.5s and/or doubles. But even with these upgrades, I’m still not sure it is our year.

Seems we hear that every year…..”by later in the season we should be seeing more 10.0 start values”. I’ll have to see it to believe it. And I wouldn’t put money on any of those 3 girls you named ever getting a shot. We’re always waiting to see this upgrade, or that new person in the lineup. I hope to be proven wrong and eat my words come the end of the season!

I think many on this board are highly critical for the most part. I do have my concerns but not one time will ever bring down the ladies. We have lost that spark since the 2019 season. A lot has changed in the program. We pretty much lost our entire coaching staff. There has been a regression of sorts. We’ve been so close winning nationals on several occasions. Bob Moore was great at what he did. DD had a fire about her like no one else. ACK was a great choreographer. We’ve lost all of them so there will be growing pains along the way. Being a great recruiter does not translate to success on the floor. I’m just not sold right now. Maybe this season will be a stepping stone for the program to get back on top. Example about others on the board speaking about depth, routine construction and details. Alyona has been in the bar lineup for 3 years and can’t hit her handstands and the dismount is at its worse. That being critical of the gymnast, but what is the coaching staff doing to minimize deductions ? I don’t see any change and that’s what the problem is. A lot of excuses and no change.

I just realized there’s a possibility this year that we won’t be in the evening session at SECs what with Missouri now on the rise :/

I think Friday’s meet is more important than Mondays- we know we don’t have a great shot against Oklahoma right now so I hope we put our best line ups forward to get an in-conference win and a good road score tomorrow.

It’s still early to make that assumption. It’s only the second week of the season. Yes the sec is loaded, but i think we need to fine tune routines. Hopefully the ladies have the mindset to let the past go and move forward. I believe we are either going to be top 3 with Florida and Auburn, or the bottom 4. Time will tell. I think most important is to be tough and get a good road score at Kentucky. The main thing for this team is to clean up our gymnastics. We won’t get great scores or the benefit of the doubt from the judges if we can’t land, clean up handstands, and hit splits on beam. Many on other boards have said for years LSU has been overscored. The proof is in the gymnastics and to see what we are doing comparing other schools, the last few years have shown me work is to be done for us to get back on top.

every meet important. in gymnastics its not about matchups its about your cumulative score over the entire season. Yes it would be nice to hoist the regular season championship trophy but Oklahoma is not in the SEC yet.

My comment was about line ups- Jay noted some AA may not be able to do AA both meets. I’d put our best line ups forward for the road score vs KY and rest people as needed vs Oklahoma even though it’s the “bigger” matchup.

Nice to see Bryce noted as a vault alternate with her double full!

A lot of criticism about the downward progression of bars since Finnegan/Priessman is probably fair

My personal opinion, I think Alyona's growth (height) has made bars far more difficult for her than her days as an elite. Notice everything is much more labored and muscled just to reach those handstand positions. I know Riley McCusker at Florida struggled with much of the same as well after she grew a bit since her elite days. The dismount issues is fair game though but Jay will always trot out a messy E skill dismount over anything with a double tuck in it. I'm hoping Alyona can improve some of these handstand positions over the course of the season which I think she can. But there isn't anyway around it, her dismount went completely backwards since last season when it looked improved the year before.

But thats only one lineup spot. We have to develop Cowan. LSU went after her because her bars were extremely strong at the JO level and we much needed it. I like Arenas but she is limited to what she can score with her transition from high to low bar and a dismount that isnt clean. Aleah may take some lumps this year on bars as she develops but its going to score well eventually when she puts it all together.

Kiya, Cowan/Dunne, Jeffrey, Finnegan, Alyona, Bryant is on paper probably our best lineup goal we need to work towards going into SECs.

Cowan Bars at JO Regional Meet

If they can get Cowan back towards this level, it will be a much needed help to the bars lineup. It would be nice to be able to use Dunne eventually but with the torn labrum I know things will be behind schedule for a bit.

Do we know who updates the meet notes? Kennedi Edney has a 10 on both vault and floor and the notes do not reflect that. Gotta give her the recognition she deserves seeing that she is a two time vault NCAA champion.

Geez, at this point I'm starting to feel like Elena's bars is going to be "Sami on beam" 2.0 in Jay's head.

The team did not appear to be physically up to the task tonight especially on floor. Aleah was so dynamic last week but seemed to be out of gas on most events this week. Changes are needed with preparation for the team. I honestly do not know what to count on for the rest of the season.

Kentucky may be very bad luck. Uggh I am heartbroken for all of them - but this season is going to be a struggle. Jay even said as much in the preseason - that there were a few key players who couldn’t be replaced. I am just not sure what the issue is - where is the ability to develop someone like Myia - who was a good level 10 gymnast into a GREAT NCAA one. That is what seems to be missing the last few years… now Jay is going to have to give some people a shot.

I will say - I am proud of Elena, Kai, and Haleigh on beam; and KJ fought through it after Bryce’s scary fall. Then our bars was also improved…and if it was going to be Kiya’s last time, I am glad they finally rewarded her bars. And as for vault…we’ll, we are now down to 3 10.0 starts most likely, so there’s that (and that, quite frankly, is unacceptable).

I would say the only good thing to come out of kiya getting hurt is Jay will definitely have to throw some other girls in the fire. Hopefully some freshman and sophomores. If kiya is seriously hurt I don’t see her coming back next year.

I feel like we need to take more Haleigh’s and Bryce’s (level 10’s) and less elites. It will also help that colleges can’t recruit at the age of 12(stupid). I’m super glad chaio is leaving elite. I can’t imagine what kind of shape konnor will be in, and we should never recruit from Texas dreams.
I would like to see the mcools get a head coaching shot if we fire Jay. I love bugs but we may should have waited a few more years before hiring her.

That is all. Loved seeing the girls fight tonight!
