Jays recruiting is outstanding although his unit (bars) has been a disappointment ever since Finnegan and Priessman graduated. The quality of routines on this event dropped quite a bit. Now have we had some good bar workers? We definitely have but I'm more so referring to quality routines 1-6.
Watching the quad meet last night with OU/UCLA/Auburn/Michigan, we are definitely very behind on bars in terms of just general form and landings.
But LSU has been hurt significantly in recent years with constantly injured incoming recruits who end up taking a year or two to heal before contributing or only provide a reduced role from what was expected of them to come in and provide. Some of them end up getting behind schedule in their development because they even went months or even years without training due to these injuries. Early recruiting is a big reason for that though. The 23 class was LSU's first recruiting class with no early recruiting, although the unfortunate part is Konnor and Zoe Miller won't be here for another year. Amari Drayton and Kylie Coen are the only two scholarship kids on their way unless they get convince one of those other 24 recruits to come join early.

Do you think having two road meets with teams (this early in the season) where judging is known to be brutal is better for motivation than having a home meet where there is familiarity and fan support? Just asking......

Bryce’s 9.85/9.70 split on beam baffles me.

I've seen a lot of tweets acknowledging that LSU's scoring was low on Friday night. It is always nice to see others in the Gymnastic Community speaking out on what we as LSU fans saw on Friday night. We all know there were stuck landings missing BUT the difficulty was there and it was competed with fight and determination. One of the many tweets came from Lori-Strong-Ballard and was well said.
QUOTE: "You always consider a .2+ advantage for the home team. It just happens. That was ridiculous! Plus, what is the incentive for doing exciting difficult gymnastics when water downed routines score the same. Not the direction we want to go. Not fair on the athletes pushing the bar"!!!

I completely agree with her! It wasn’t a fair representation of how they competed. And this score hurts the team in overall standings. I really hope they can end up throwing this one out.

I just hope this road meet to Kentucky will not be another disappointment in scoring. We haven't fared well when going there but I will HOPE for a different outcome this time. I still think two road trips (back to back) at the beginning of the season to LESS than welcoming environments (with biased judging) can put a team's RQS at a deficit. Oh do I miss the days when we started the season with a 197.

I am also a little worried about our road scoring at Kentucky this coming weekend, but what gives me comfort is knowing that the other meets we have that will count as away meets for us towards the back half of the season are Auburn, Alabama (which is always a whacko cracko scoring meet), Arkansas (which we’ve done well there in the past) and the podium challenge all before post season. If we can at the very least stick some landings this weekend, I have no doubt the scores will come that we need

The last three on floor (Finnegan, Bryant, and Kiya Johnson) gave me very Edney-Finnegan-Kelley vibes. Or even Edney-Finnegan-Hambrick vibes. That was refreshing to see.

KJ will score well weekly as well! She was just a fluke!

Same with ballard in the lead off. She has the same energy as Desiderio but better execution and form than her in my opinion

Kailin Chio has dropped down to level 10. Wondering if she would consider graduating early and starting in 2023, if she's healthy enough to compete.

I heard there were some discussions about this. Honestly wouldn't be a bad trade off to get her in for 23 while Konnor and Zoe come in a year later.
Depends on how the school stuff works out but she would immediately impact LSU's beam and bars from day 1.

The scoring was comparatively low against Utah but that's not what I'm most worried about. There is still a lack of attention to polish and details, especially on bars and beam. Compare some of our earlier bars and beam routines to those of the other top teams and the difference is obvious.
I agree we have had some bad luck with potential recruits being unable to compete as many events as well as we had initially hoped, but this is by no means a phenomenon that only LSU experiences. Plenty of other teams have gymnasts taken out for season due to injury etc. My concern is that over the past few years we have seen very little development of the athletes who have come in. Either they maintain the form they already had when they came in (eg Kiya, Haleigh, Aleah) or their form has actually gotten worse (eg Alyona on bars, Kai on bars even before her surgery, Dunne - not sure what is happening on most of her events). I hope this is not too harsh but Jay needs to get it together and be more flexible about routine construction. Not everyone can do a Ray to Pak combination and a double layout.

It will be interesting to see how Jay handles these next 3 meets. We need good scores but I don’t think you can ask kiya to do aa that many times. I would like to see some other routines/ladies. Not sure which meet. I would go with the ok or mizzou meet. Try some different lineups and see what shakes out. But we all know Jay will probably keep kiya in vt with just full(Eyeroll), keep her bars and beam, and just replace her floor. What do y’all think?
ETA: or just replace her with Elena because he keeps trying to make her an aa when she is so clearly not the best option in some events.

I would like to see more of the freshmen eg Cowan on bars, Bryce on vault at least (in addition to beam), and KJ's 1.5 on vault. I'd generally like to see more of the potential 'options' out there, especially for the 10.0 starts on vault. Floor is the least of my worries now: we should be OK with quite a few options.

I thought KJ was training a double not the 1.5 on vault as an upgrade. This past Friday’s meet lineup predictions sheet was the first time I learned of her upgrading her vault to a 1.5 and not the double.

I echo Russian gym’s concern above - the polish is severely lacking, especially on bars. I don’t know how that was previously addressed and why it has seemed to be going downhill since Dd left (really after Finnegan/Priessman/Kelley).
Also, another concern is that we absolutely need a huge score at that MLK meet since it is our first home meet and OK will be there; scores have the propensity to fly. However, we will have had a meet three days prior against KY - so I wonder what Jay’s strategy is. I feel like we need to have best case lineups in the Monday meet, because it will be fairly bleak for the season if we can’t close to a mid 197 at home against Oklahoma.

I just want to say that I really don’t understand all the negativity after the very first meet of the season. Yes, there are still some things here and there, but every team not named Oklahoma will have a few things here and there. Do y’all not remember last year when the judges scores were tight? The team’s response to that was not good. They tightened up and it showed in their performance. I did not see that at all Friday. They had to replace half of their beam lineup and throw two young athletes who have never competed before in front of the largest crowd you will find at a NCAA gym meet, and they still hit every routine 2-6 without even a check. Y’all give them a chance. I’ve seen some good changes from last year. ENJOY this team. They are doing some of the most difficult and unique pieces of gymnastics individually as a team that you will find in NCAA.
One more thing… I understand it’s frustrating to slip in rankings, but please keep in mind that we are in unprecedented seasons in ncaa gymnastics history. We are seeing a huge impact from all the Covid seniors returning for 5th years. Unfortunately, LSU has not been as lucky thus far compared to other teams with what was on the roster to take advantage of that. Fingers crossed that will change in the next two classes! There is just so much more parity than there ever has been thanks to that and NIL.

I don’t think we are being negative towards the girls so much as the coaching and routine construction. Also we will never be in the running for a championship again with 2 fulls in the vault rotation. It’s just not going to score good at nationals and there are too many other teams with 6 10.0 vaults. Oklahoma’s vaults didn’t look great but they are throwing all 10 sv to start the season.

I think we will see all 6 10.0 start values at some point in the season. I thought I heard or read somewhere that Chase, KJ, and Bryce have 1.5s and/or doubles. But even with these upgrades, I’m still not sure it is our year.
Does gymnastics have a transfer portal like football? If so, we need to get in there and get us another amazing bar worker!
