Last year this cost us a guy we really wanted, Sentimore. And this year it has the potential to cost us two more - Fobbs & Jackson.

What is a little puzzling to me on both these accounts is that two of them are DT's, the area where we are the thinnest. I don't recall the big name DT we lost out on last year that caused us to shy away from Sentimore, but this is puzzling nonetheless.

Growing up in the 80's it seemed Louisiana never produced a lot of homegrown DT's - aside from an occasional Marc Boutte. Now we grow them every year and end up sending them off to other D-1 programs while we chase the #1 DT prospects from out of state - who we never seem to get.

I really do think Les' strongsuit is recruiting I'm just a little disappointed we're focusing our attention on "greener grass" when the grass around us is pretty damn good.

Stepping off my soapbox now...

Yep last year we sure lost out on in state talent by getting the top two DT's in our state who happened to be two of the best DT's in the country.

Not to mention T Reed didn't see an LSU coach from July of last year until mid Dec., per his HC.That 80 mile trip to Thibodeaux must be tougher than a trip to Cali or Va.

I wouldn't really call Jackson a "big name DT" we were probably holding off on him because we thought we could do better, and we didn't really need Fobbs until Davis and Hunter bailed. I actually don't mind the way that Miles has played this, We took a shot at a big time out of state recruit and got unlucky in the end.
Would you rather play it conservative and not go after those type of players?
We have proved that we can land the big fish (Ware)from out of state, we just had some bad luck at the end. IMO

Weren't his academic problems what kept LSU from recruiting him hard early?

That and we thought we could get Davenport and McFarland.

Les has been lucky with replacing kids not totally sold on LSU or with marginal grades with solid 4 star out-of-staters. Didn't pan out that way this year. Record the last two years and all the negativity surrounding the program probably has something to do with that.
Let's hope that changes and let's hope the philosophy on in-state recruiting changes.

We had some bad luck this year , but even with that we are still in the top ten. It's really frustrating to hear people always talking about in-state talent, while I do agree that it is important I don't see what the big fuss is about we still get 90% of the ones that we want.

Every state loses top players every year it's just a fact accept it. think about the out of state guys we have picked up recently (Peterson, Shepard, Loston, Montgomery)

If we continue to get 90% of the big in-state guys and snag a few big name guys from other states, how can you argue that's not good?

Well, what came first, the negativity or the last two years' record? Hahaha. Silly question. This is the Rant/recruiting board.

academic/character problems also kept us away from DS early.

Miles cant win with some of you morons.

It's either "oooh oooh...LSU isnt an Elite school because we dont get great recruits from all over the country...waaah waaah...."

Or

"LSU doesnt keep ABSOLUTELY EVERY FREAKING GOOD/GREAT LOUISIANA PLAYER here at LSU...waaah..waaah."

You guys are clueless.

I agree Cookieman these clowns will find something to bitch about no matter what, the real underlying problem that has everyone gripping is the record/ coaching the past two seasons so everyone magnifies every slip up in recruiting. The recruiting is going very well and next year will be even better

I agree, we can't get all of the top recruits. Grades and character play a big part in who we will recruit. If they don't fit, they don't fit regardless of the Star Ranking on rivals. If he recruits problems, the nay sayers will be all over Miles.

Totally agree with your post. Unfortunately, whether it be the recruits themselves or a family member or friend do read these adolescent remarks and it could have an impact on whether visits are taken or even going the TIGERS route.

My thought is that Miles can do NO wrong with some of you sunshine pumpers. Look Mr. Recruiting expert, it's fantastic that Miles is in the conversation with the big time out of state recruits - no problem whatsoever - but read the title of my OP - He's playing cool on the in state guys. Playing cool - as in they don't hear from him until he's spurned by the guy he wanted.

Again Mr. Recruiting genius, nobody, and I mean nobody wants to be somebody's second fiddle. A lot of these kids have a little dignity and class, neither are they stupid. They're going to honor the folks that showed interest in them from the beginning and made the offer while Les was in Cali chasing some kid that lives in the shadow of the LA Coliseum. These kids know when they're the last resort and they know when they're being played.

Bottom line is LSU needs to do a better job in showing interest the whole way through, not just a week before NSD when Option A falls through. That's just dumb. And some of you so called "recruiting experts" are on par with that.

Funny thing is you were probably one of the guys who was super pumped when we signed Houston Bates instead of Brandon Jackson or Fobbs.

ETA - and I'm not bashing Bates, but we've got enough DE's for two SEC teams. DE is hardly a "need" area.

This bears repeating, for emphasis. You are very right. CLM & Co. would do well to be showing love to the LA prospects and the out of state target prospects, equally. History has shown us that it is our own home-grown talent that most often outperforms the imports.

That's genius... string a kid along who is down the totem pole and tell him LSU doesn't want you when there is no room for him to sign... I think Miles is doing it the right way. Being straight with these kids will get them more respect for the future.
