Thanks for posting. I'm glad I saw this so I can keep an eye on the DFW kids next season.

Baranik and Bell appear to be big time. We'll know a little more next weekend after the showcase.

Jake Cave sounds like one for sure. I remember when he committed, I just hope we can get him to campus since he's a lefty throwing in the 90s. Sounds like a stud at the plate too. One might wonder what level of competition he faced but hitting .670 and driving in almost 2 RBI per game is pretty amazing against any level.

quote:

It's little wonder LSU would like to use Cave on the mound and in the outfield. He hit .670 (65-for-97) with 11 homers and 71 RBI in 31 games this spring for Hampton Christian. He went 10-0 on the mound for the Warriors, pitching a four-hitter in their 4-2 win over Carlisle School of Martinsville in the Division III independent schools state championship game. He used his bat, his changeup and his fastball, which tops at 93 mph, to help the Canes' showcase baseball team win the WWBA U-16 national title on Monday.

Link to the PG National Showcase blog. Baranik's outing, Cave's hitting, and a few other Louisiana players are mentioned. Kline from Northshore, Reeves from Neville(?), Hebert from Breaux Bridge, and Catellano from Evangel.

quote:

RHP Carson Baranik (Bossier City, LA) continued the strong run of Gold pitching working his fastball 89-91mph with life. His off speed stuff was very good with a sharp biting breaking ball and real good change up.

quote:

Jake Cave (Hampton, VA) showed well with the bat and can flat out hit.

Added to the blog yesterday...

quote:

LHP Cody Glenn (Houston, TX) showed a loose arm and sat 88-91 mph with his fastball and projects for even more down the road.

My best friend played with Jake Cave at the Commonwealth Games a couple years ago (mainly for seniors, Cave was invited as a sophomore). Cave was already committed and already throwing in the 90's. My friend doesn't think it's likely he'll end up on campus anywhere.
Also, word is that UVA's pitching coach called him up and cursed him out for not choosing UVA.
Sounds like a complete stud at the plate as well, but I think pitching is his future.

That doesn't seem like a very effective recruiting strategy.

Couple of notes from PG Nationals
Bell was not there- not sure why
Evan Powell chose not to come to rest for Team USA trials
Cave was there - but did not throw at all. Seems to have a sore arm. I doubt he ever comes to LSU.
Tyler Moore- though not blogged in PG- in a versatile player- can catch, play some infield-- I see him as a corner guy.
Terrance Magee - from East Code area code tryouts- unbelievable speed, plus arm and above avg bat. Thought he might be a football guy who can play baseball, but he could put the football down at any time and excel on the baseball field.

Cave is definitely the real thing. My little cousin was a year behind him at Hampton Christian (a very small private school not far from Bethel HS where Allen Iverson went) before Jake transferred to public Kecoughtan (pronounced KIK-uh-tan) for the increased competition. I think LSU has at least a fighting chance to get him on campus, but it ain't gonna be easy.

BTW, that sounds sadly typical of U.Va. -- the errors the Cavs have made over the years are mind-blowing. Some examples: Don Shula was once an assistant football coach there (the school didn't fight to keep him b/c they weren't sure he was all that good); Michael Jordan's first choice was U.Va. to play with Ralph Sampson -- the Hoos didn't even recruit him b/c they didn't think he was any good (incidentally, NC State was his second choice, Chapel Hill was #3). Unbelievable. . . .

I wonder if Bell may be injured. As of yesterday he wasn't showing any stats for the Summer on his team's site.

Any word on Story?

Nola threw 3 no-hit innings in the 17U WWBA Championships today. Fastball was 86-89 and had good control of all of his pitches according to Perfect Game.
