Anyone got the skinny on this? Appears as if any rule that required sitting out a year has been removed. Unlimited transfers here we go!

Basically, if I read that right, athletes, like all other “ professionals” will have the right to transfer from school to school with no penalty just like any other gig. I don’t see how conference “ rules” can have any legal standing either which means one can be QB at Auburn one semester and at Alabama the next. I would imagine that only school requirements that apply to academics can be maintained.

They’ve got to figure out one year contracts at some point

Athletes sign scholarships. These are renewable yearly at the schools and athletes mutual agreement.

Name one professional sport in which players can up and leave whenever they want, hint there isn’t one. Make these players sign either 2 year contracts or 4 year contracts with no opt out clause. That’ll stop the transfer portal immediately or at most let everyone transfer once. They’ll be paid by the schools so contracts would be enforceable

Soon there will be transfers at the end of the fall semester that play for their new team in that season’s playoffs.

Not that I enjoy the unlimited transfer rule, but no other level of sport has year to year contracts. That's the difference.

Baseball and Basketball contracts are guaranteed. Are you suggesting their contracts should be guaranteed whether employees end up being good or not?

This would actually set collegiate athletes apart from almost every other gig, but nice try.

It's up to the fans/public/alumni to shut it down. As long as you watch there won't be any penalties.

Things were bad but this just makes it bonkers.

Link? And I'm not making a value statement, I'm just making a statement of fact. It sounds like they are basically fluid free agents. If a union is formed and an agreement made, then you could nail something else down. Or a super conference with specific contractual obligations. But none of that exists yet-hence basically free agents like plumbers or carpenters or anything else where one trades one's services for compensation.

For starters, they would be just about the only employees in the AD that could leave with no notice, penalty, or restrictions.

What? You can leave your job with no penalty at any time. You just walk out and go to any other place. That’s America.

Oh, really?

A football coach can just quit his job and go work for another team with no penalty?

A football coach has a contract and is obligated by contract law. A player is “ labor “ and has no such obligation or responsibility.
