Kid has one season left and hjs dad has pissed off the TAM admin and fanbase. I dont think he leaves as long as Early stays in place but we would be foolish to not make a play for him.

I'm sure Frey can figure things out at 1B but I've seen him practice there and you can tell he had very few reps there. He was decent has a Catcher but I doubt he has a future there. OF is his most likely position. The problem is, there will probably be a better option defensively for LSU. I don't see a scenario where he comes back. Players to watch are probably Noot, Guidry, and Larson.

People don't draft DHs very high, it is why Tommy White came to LSU to play 3rd Base. Frey will be back to play a position, either outfield or 1st base.
Frey is in a different class athletically. As Project stated, he'll have a couple of seasons in the minors to figure out a position. That's what the minors are for: development. They don't care if shaky defense costs them some games. I think Derek Jeter still holds a record for errors with 56.

Unless he gets drafted high enough to warrant a significant signing bonus, there may be no financial incentive for him to leave. NIL will impact that decision.

I agree with you. He's popped up on a few Top 150 lists. That's Top 5 rounds which I think we'll be enough for him to make the leap. Now, if I'm wrong and he's not viewed as a Top 10 round guy, then yes, I think he returns. NIL has helped get some guys to campus, but I have yet to see at LSU or anywhere else where NIL has gotten a Top 5 round type player to give up all of his draft leverage and return with only one year of eligibility remaining.

You wouldn't happen to have a list of the top guys who have jumped into the portal would you? Be interesting to see who is available.

If he were a draft-eligible sophomore, I think we would be coming back, I keep forgetting he is a junior. If he thinks he can improve his stock a bit, he will come back. But since he is a junior, he loses leverage if he does come back, so that will have an impact, which I didn't take into account with my first statement..

What kind of NIL money is he making now at LSU? Anything close to what he could possibly get as a 5th rounder?

I have no idea what Frey is making. I was told Bear is around $250k.
2025 Draft bonus pool and all pick values
$407k last pick in the 5th round
$250k last pick in the 7th round.

They would get half of that signing bonus at signing and the rest the following year. So in theory a 250k NIL deal could compete with up to a 500k signing bonus pending the player still has leverage and has a legitimate shot at improving or maintaining his draft position.
He could collect 250k in NIL and then if he makes 500k or higher the following draft then he comes out ahead.
ETA: Unless they have changed they way that signing bonuses are paid out.

Some at C, some in OF, less at 1st.
In this case, “some” means very few. Not his fault of course, but he would benefit financially from a draft perspective with a full year playing in the field every day. Just my opinion, but if he comes back and rakes, and proves that he can play 1st, he’s a top 3 round guy.

I am not sure his NIL for this year, but next year he would probably step up a bit if he returned.
The signing bonus would be the thing that makes it worthwhile of not. The salary for a 5th rounder who would end up in the minors would be 20-35K, but the bonus could be in the 400-600 K range I believe.
