Well Jay will have a head start on the portal this year. I know this isn't the thread to go into that but have to expect some staff changes are on the way also.

I was looking at MLB Pipeline draft rankings this morning and here is where our guys stand

34 - Logan Schmidt
35- Jensen Hirschkorn
90- Cooper Sides
92- Anthony Murphy
101 - Malachi Washington
120- Kolby Stringer
131- Dominic Santerelli
141-Nathaniel Davis
144- Lucas Nawrocksi
148- CJ Weinstein

I would say good bye to Schmidt and Hirschkorn. There has been 1 top 40 prospect in the last 3 drafts not to sign and get drafted (Our own William Schmidt)

But was cool is most of our guys are 90 up which is where you really start to see the signing rate drop.

Only 17/68 HS ranked 90-250 signed

We may have landed this class right I the sweet spot.

If we get most of the HS class, how deep in the portal will we go? Especially for position players?

tons of talent in the OF but do you wanna play all freshmen out there? We kinda don’t want another growing year. but still thee are so many guys you have to hope a few really pop and are ready

I think santerelli, Murphy, Davis, and Washington will all make a significant impact from day 1 should they all make it to campus

I think Luke Tucker is also underrated

it’s a tough dilemma. It’s hard to rely on so many freshmen being ready right away.

But you also are brining in these guys for a reason.

I think it means instead of going for 2 or 3 infielders in the portal, we go for 1.

Same with the outfield.

We basically keep spots open to rotate freshmen in and see who sticks.

According to Armstrong who is probably getting his info from Doyle. There is a small chance for Hirschkorn. He has the potential to elevate his draft stock to top 10 pick if he comes to school.

I'll wait to be pleasantly surprised.

He had the single most dominant outing in Area Code Games history. And that sticks with scouts. I don't doubt that is what Armstrong is hearing, I just think someone is going to give him a shitload of money.

One of the macro trends for this draft is that every player pool except high school pitchers is underperforming. College bats are soft, college arms are soft, and high school bats don't normally pick up steam in the spring because of variable nature of the competition.

That means there will probably be a lot more money thrown at high school pitchers in this draft than normal.

Hopefully it means we can get more of the bats to campus than we expected though.

I agree with that assessment. The people that think we’re turning over half our roster through the portal have not been listening to Jay the past month.

Gavin Guidry is expected to pitch for Chatham in the Cape Cod league this summer.

A college second baseman hitting .296 with 8 HR is being mocked as a top 10 pick… that’s how weak this college crop is…

There was a generational college class three years after the 5 round draft, not coincidental.

Since then, there have been so many rules extending the careers of fringe guys that would otherwise be out of baseball altogether but they're still there taking up ABs and innings from younger guys that could turn into more with that development. It's really crushed the development of so many players. There are entire classes of guys who basically just had their opportunities stolen from them because the NCAA refused to tell people no on eligibility cases.

I don't have a problem with Dax Dathe as a pitcher or person, but there is no legitimate reason he should still have eligibility and be on this team. He didn't throw a ton of innings, but the ones he did could have gone to someone else that would have benefitted more down the line.

Just like when I didn't like playing Mac Bingham over freshmen Jake Brown and Ashton Larson.

And those are just the LSU examples. It's so much worse on the macro level.

I found this piece by Jason Armstrong interesting. He dove into how LSU and Georgia built their rosters. Georgia played no freshman. They had a couple of guys that have come through the program, a few guys that they got through the portal but took a couple of years to develop and a few guys that are one year portal players. They hit on their portal additions and fielded an older team.

Is the portal just luck? Is it about NIL money? Evaluating?

Jay is going to be a madman this off-season. We need more hits and less misses next year.

Are any local guys here familiar with Dylan Champagne from Dutchtown? He is a freshman at Jones College, a strong JUCO in Mississippi. He's played 3rd base, catcher, and most recently shortstop at a listed 6'4" 215. 4 homers but 18 doubles. Slashing .389/.495/.569.

Looks like he was getting smaller school looks a QB and may have missed his SR year of baseball due to injury.

Just wondering if he's someone that could be getting looks from us down the road.

We might be making a move for him. He’s been one of my favorite juco guys to track this season.

I think evaluations play a big part in it. But I also don't think that's a reliable strategy every year either. We hit on all of our portal additions last year. This year we obviously didn't. But from year to year you have no idea of the quality of players you're going to have to choose from.
