So if we go after non power 4 guys they need to be top 100 prospects? Dickinson hit over .300 in conference at LSU and it’s hard to imagine winning the CWS in 2025 without him. I hate to say just go after the P4 guys but prospect wise no one we brought in this past year was comparable to Dickinson in that regard. Dickinson was able to translate his skills to the SEC. The others weren’t. But like you said, how many non P4 guys are out there that are top 100 prospects with all the other intangibles he brought to the table? You nailed it with the unicorn comment.

I still think there is a role on the team for the guys like playoff Papi without having to depend on them to be everyday impact guys.

Pitching it might be a little easier to get away with because you have so many pitchers on the team so maybe you can be a little more aggressive with the lower level guys and let Nate develop them.

ETA: project, I know it’s too early but could there be anyone out there that could fit the Dickinson model if they were to enter the portal?

I think it's a case by case basis.

I don't think Cowan was a top 100 prospect. McManus wasn't a top 100 prospect. If you're looking for a super star? probably so yeah. But in general. scouts don't have to love them for Jay to love them.

I just don't think he really loved much of this portal class, outside of Yorke. Between his BB/K ratio, power potential, bat to ball ability, and family ties, I'm really shocked he floundered as much as he did.

I know nothing of the intangibles, but Jamie Laskofski from William & Mary would be my number one low major shortstop target. Played third as a freshman, shortstop this year. Fields good enough, .940 but with some highlight reel plays that tell you more is there.

Hits for power and average. Steals bases. Performed against power conference competition. Hits in the clutch. And doesn’t turn 20 until like November.

There’s a report out that Notre Dame is cutting baseball to 10.7 scholarships. Not sure of the veracity but it seems legit.

I think Bino Watters would be a good fit in Baton Rouge.

I hope LSU isn't making a mistake by letting Lucas Lawrence from Catholic High go to Ole Miss. I know his "stuff" doesn't jump off the page, but he dominates on the mound. Had another great performance yesterday in the state finals.

Reminds me of Sawyerr Pruitt from last year. No one could hit him in HS. Fastball velo not where the SEC wants. Would probably crawl to LSU if asked. Decent freshman year at ULL. 59 IP 4.22 ERA.

I also hope we aren’t making a mistake letting Braylon Montgomery (Walker) go to Oklahoma

I know. Me too. It's so frustrating with our team in this position. Just looking for anything positive and all we can do is wait and see what happens with the portal and the draft. Next season can't get here fast enough for me to forget this train wreck we just watched.

This is the only place to discuss baseball these days without being overrun by morons. It's hard to imagine how we got this bad this year but I know Jay is 10x more frustrated than any of us are. Interested to see what happens in the coming weeks.

I'm more excited for June 1 (portal opening) than I am September 5.

As a reminder, do not let anyone on the rant know we are discussing the portal in here when the time comes.

Admins, please leave this stickied at the bottom of the page. I cannot deal with that shite leaking into this thread.

I heard today that Mizzou is going to keep Kerrick Jackson for one more year in case Vitello gets fired by the Giants, so they can make a run at him.

This comes from one of their biggest NIL guys across all sports.

Vitello might not get another year at this point

Didn't he take umbrage with being passed over at Mizzou in the past? I get it's his alma mater, but still. You'd also have to think they would need to be VERY committed to baseball in order for him to go there.

Who knows, maybe they could time it right and bring TV home and add Scherzer as the pitching coach, even though we know Anderson's gay arse will follow TV wherever he goes.

That AD left about 3 weeks after he didn’t hire Vitello.

Scherzer would have to be one of the money guys.

I still think Arizona State is the best spot for him to land, but as it currently stands he’s got full support of Giants brass. They’re making personnel decisions that illustrate their support of him.

Vitello will be at a power SEC program when he returns.

Weirdly definitive statement about a guy that doesn’t even know if he wants to coach college baseball ever again.
