Jay mentioned something last week about them not sure if they would be able to keep him on the roster or not.
Ah, didn't see that. I need to catch up on some of the press conferences and interviews from last week. I was on a trip and didn't spend much time worrying about this stuff.

Today I learned, Xavier Paul's son is a junior at Slidell High. Xavier Paul, III.

Off-day non-LSU question: seeing big Yorke and his fast start made me think of Stanford’s Japanese star first baseman who goes 6’1 270 Rintaro Sasaki
LINK
Sasaki hit 140 home runs in his high school career in Japan, so why only seven at Stanford last year? I’m not trying to poke holes, just a really big difference. His home field at Stanford goes 335 ft, 400 ft, 335 ft.
And Project, did you see he was drafted by the NPB while at Stanford? from what I understand this is rare because there are rules requiring Japanese professional teams to draft kids who attend schools within Japan.

Velo and heavy air. He probably just never faced high velo until getting to the states. And the marine layer suppresses homers (but is probably a smaller contributing factor).

Him and Kenny Ishikawa were both drafted by NPB. I didn't know about the rules requiring them to draft players in Japan though, I'd have to read up on that.

depends if he played in the Koshien or happened to play against any of the big prospects. They currently have the Genki whatever kid that recently hit 98 which is getting him close to Sasaki (101) and Ohtani(99).
But in general even though the average japanese player trains way way way more than average american hs player and has since they were 6 or 7....the average HS pitcher there still throws in the low 80s, just like here.
So even if he had seen velo....it was prolly a 1 off. What helps the american kids is they see it at every big travel tournament in HS. Really common in tournaments like both WWBA events, the NPI, Team USA team championship tournaments and ones like that to never see anything below 90 once you are in 16u or older and common to see even at 15u.
but i find 7 home runs as a freshman to be pretty good....am I off on that?

Everyone does. It includes every HS in the country.

He did not live up to the hype that was built around him as a hitter in general or as a power hitter. He was also essentially a redshirt freshman. A more physically developed player with a reputation as a power hitter and an extra 6 months in a college weight program hitting the same amount of homers as a guy whose questions about power potential pushed him to college (Curiel) is not impressive in context.

dont many of the prospects skip it now? due to injury risk?

oh ok, i didnt keep up with him specifically was just looking at it as a freshman starting in general at that type of school is very impressive much less hitting 7 homeruns. didnt realize he was that hyped and had an extra year under his belt.

Sasaki is currently 20 about to turn 21 in a couple months; last year was definitely a disappointing year from him considering he was definitely on the "older" end of the spectrum for a freshman being 19 coming in and turning 20 in the middle of the season. Obviously with the size he has and clout coming in, 7 HRs was kind of a joke from him, and the average was mediocre to boot.
He's starting out this year hitting .231 but has 2 doubles and a dinger in 4 games (against good/solid competition)
Will be interesting to see how he develops; they had him 8th/9th in the lineup the first 3 games and moved him to 5th in the lineup this apst game.
Stanford plays Cal St Fullerton 4x this weekend

Not that anyone probably really cares, but because I mentioned it, Stanford split the series 2-2 with CSF and NEITHER team scored more than 4 runs in any game the entire 4 game series
Sasaki went 1 for 11 (single) with 3 walks and 1 K on the weekend
He's hitting 4 for 24 on the season now (.167)....ouch

hard to keep up with all the recruiting rules, but Jay is on Mik'd Up and mentioning FL high school commits by name that were watching LSU in the tournament this weekend. Is this legal now?

He said they were 2026 guys so I assume they signed in the fall.
ETA: I just looked up one the guys he mentioned Parker Loew and he signed back in November.

Makes sense, didn’t realized they signed so early

I know not recruiting related but I saw a reel yesterday from Tread Athletics and it appears as if Riley Cooper signed with the Reds. I don’t like making threads so figured I would post here. Sorry if already mentioned.
