I had not been paying attention to Wachs this summer, but it looks like they are positioning him to play CF

It would be pretty surprising if an athletic guy can’t develop into an atleast average outfielder in year 3. Guys like Crews and Brown never played OF full time in their prep career until they got to campus, and both went from atrocious to plus defenders.

Seems like it, then if you have all 3 in the outfield, im sure in later game situations with the lead a guy like wachs gets replaced with someone like patrick for defense.
Same with davis for laya, and vice versa

Crews was a unicorn but Brown is a good athlete who was just an average OF. So it can go both ways

I dont see this as some big issue. 4th outfielders and 5th infielders usually get plenty of playing time due to injuries and slumps and days off

Maybe they should move signing day for high schoolers to after draft
Teams spend a lot of time and $ recruiting the high schoolers only to recruit over them in the portal
For all the OF’s in the class not one fr would see meaningful playing time
Same thing with infielders not to mention someone like Ruckert can’t be happy either

There’s a logjam in the OF now and honestly Ruckert needs to master one position before we can start talking like he is a utility player. I can’t see him being used in the OF with Nate Davis coming to campus. That puts the number at 5 along with the 3 transfers.
I assume Ruckert will backup 2B.
Pearson will backup 3B.

I’m sure Jay would have gone about the portal haul differently if the other HS OF would have taken their names out of the draft. Jay has to do what’s best for next year’s team and not any individual player. Weve done the best when guys like ruckert are willing to earn their playing time and contribute to what’s best for the team.

Ruckert, Patrick, Davis, pearson, and Yamin will play imo

It will take injuries for Ruckert to play. Park, Milam, and Kurland will stay on the field. Pearson, Patrick, and Yamin are at least RH bats, so they will get some ABs. Davis is just too talented to not play some, at the very least.
ETA: I like that Jay has created a vision not just for next year but the following year. He's thinking about the roster/lineup more than just 1 year at a time.

Now I think, like you said, We see him play in 35+ games between off days, late inning subs, pinch hits, and pinch running situations.
I just also think that any pathway he had to the OF is now gone. Like with Laya + Davis out there, you have less of a need for Ruckert to get OF reps in practice. If that makes sense. Long day so it's kind of just a ramble
