Might get some push back on this, but I think it's pretty fricked up to wait until LSU places you in a great summer league, and you're away from the campus/coach, to enter the portal.

If that’s how it played out, yea that’s kinda crappy

I have no inside information here. I’m just speculating. Guys who go 0-12 as freshman don’t typically get invites to the north woods on their own.

Hogg in the portal too according to John Eades at WAFB. That one is less of a surprise.

Blaise Priester and Dylan Thompson to the portal, per Andrew Reidell, a relatively new college baseball personality from Loyola New Orleans.

If guys don’t play as freshman it seems safe to assume most won’t stay anymore huh?

Apparently. Despite evidence of what sticking it out can do for you right there in the locker room.

It will be hard to rely on the portal in this way every year losing guys like Costello.

I can't think of anyone on the current team besides Frey that this would apply to. I kind of understand it from the player's perspective. Even if you do play as a freshman there's still a chance that other guys are brought in and take your spot (Larson) and you know Jay is going to bring in a big transfer bat to compete at a position like 1B. But that's how it's going to be at the top programs.

Either you want to compete for a championship caliber team or you don't.

I mean what can you do though. There is no way he thought he was going to play much at 1B over Jones. And Frey took hold of the DH role. Both of those guys will likely not be back next year.

Yea I’m not blaming anyone. It just sucks to have to rely on a new team each year.

His numbers at New Mexico this year are good too. I assume it’s a pretty hitter friendly environment over there also Project?).

BA .388
2B 25
3B 2
HR 16
RBI 63
SLG .748
OB .470
BB 29
SO 29

Only 17 chances in 52 games so was likely a DH almost exclusively.

Yeah, New Mexico is at elevation. And lot of their commonly played opponents are as well.

How can we ever build a clubhouse culture if there are no upper classmen on the team who are program guys?? Costello had to have been told to look elsewhere because he had the chance to start at 1st next year

Note on Eli Jerzembeck: he missed all of 2024 with a torn UCL and then missed all of 2025 with a stress fracture in his pitching elbow. Apparently he was penciled in as South Carolina's Friday night starter in the fall but struggled in preseason scrimmages, which led to the stress fracture discovery.

And based on reports of how Paul and Rooney treated injured pitchers, he was probably encouraged to keep throwing while hurt.

I mentioned that recruiting developmental type HS players will go away in a thread three or four years ago to a flury of downvotes but you are seeing it come true. Hogg was a star his whole career and he comes to LSU and sits the bench. He might also sit the bench next year and maybe the year after that. You can't blame him for wanting to go somewhere where he is going to start. Costello could have very well earned 1B next year but it could have gone to John Pearson, Ebel, Young, Braun or to a portal player just as easily.

If I was Jay I would maybe develop some Louisiana kids, for example John Pearson but if they are not top 100 HS players, I would move on. Large HS classes, like the 2025, just don't make sense anymore. It sucks for fans and sucks even more for coaches but it is what it is. Build your team from the portal and top tier HS players.
