yea they need at least 2 proven big time hitters and 2 proven pitchers who can start on weekends to get where they want to be and thats if Herring and Jones come back
Posted on 5/17/24 at 7:56 am to Midtiger farm
Saying we need 2 weekend starters is a bit premature. Looking at the list posted earlier in this thread, we will be fine with adding 1 weekend guy.
Starting pitching: Shores, Herring, Johnson, Moffett, Noot, Anderson, Guidry has been mentioned.
Sure hope Herring comes back!

I think like project says, development isn’t always linear. That’s a bunch of talented guys that are not proven at all in starting weekend games. We are at a point that we are just rolling out openers on Sunday just hoping we can get through the weekend. I don’t think Jay will go into next year confident that he will have a Friday night or Saturday guy from that group. A couple are coming off of injury and some like Johnson have had an incredibly rough start to his career.

Portal arm to monitor: Alex Valentin from Nova Southeastern in Florida. LHP just finished his freshman year.

I have nothing to confirm this, so I haven’t taken him off the list, but I’m wondering if Daniel Arambula is still in the incoming recruiting class.

This class, as for MIF, has changed a lot over the past year. If you look at the rankings at the bottom of page 1. Hogg #31, Arambula #49, Casan Evans #82, Mike Ryan #127. That's a pretty promising list of prospects.
Now, Hogg #347, Evans listed as pitcher, Arambula maybe gone and no longer ranked, Ryan #202. Doesn't quite look as promising.

Is this the same PG high school list to compare apples to apples?
I'm not saying you are wrong as I haven't seen an updated PG list since February, just questioning it because a lot of lists now are prospect lists for the draft including college prospects, so it is expected they would all drop a decent amount.

I really wonder what the deal is with Hogg. Has a great profile as a big athletic kid. Wonder if he’s struggling hitting the ball.

the trend of early recruiting will slow down with the portal being the way it is
William Schmidt was close to being cut after his fr season at Catholic, just goes to show you how players develop on a different time scale
He was nowhere near a first round projection early in his high school career

I believe you are correct Baytiger. The list on page 1 of this thread, I think is HS only. The rankings on page 40 include college players.
So this probably a rise in the rankings for Ryan. Evans is listed as a two way player, so we will see what the plans are in the fall.
It still seems to be a drop by Hogg and Arambula and those two were rated the highest.

Update to the 2024 PG rankings since I last posted everyone back in like August last year. Here's how every commit has trended for us:
#2 -> #2 OF Konnor Griffin - MS
#15 -> #5 LHP Cam Caminiti - AZ
#3 -> #6 OF Derek Curiel - CA
#9 -> #10 C Cade Arrambide - TX
#19 RHP William Schmidt - LA (Wasn't a commit back in Aug last year)
#82 -> #57 SS Casan Evans - TX
#31 -> #63 SS David Hogg II - TX
#64 LHP Boston Bateman - CA (Wasn't a commit back in Aug last year)
#71 -> #68 3B Kale Fountain - NE
#81 1B Ryan Costello - NJ (Committed just after I posted my Aug list last year)
#127 -> #91 SS Michael Ryan - LA
#22 -> #104 RHP Landon Victorian - LA
#49 -> #107 3B Daniel Arambula - CA
#122 RHP Mavrick Rizy - MA (Committed after Aug last year)
#148 -> #219 RHP Stunner Gonzales - CA
#273 -> #268 OF John Pearson - LA
#405 -> #282 LHP Brady Kehlenbrink - MO
#337 -> #420 RHP Grant Breaux - LA
Decommits since then:
#115 -> ??? (Cant seem to find new ranking) RHP Matthew Champion - CA [claim Oregon commit on twitter but uncommitted on PG profile]
#197 -> #265 OF Max Charles - AZ [Grand Canyon commit]
#254 -> #323 OF Noah Malone - CA [Loyola Marymont commit]
>500 -> >500 SS Owen Galt - LA [Louisiana-Lafayette commit]
Here's how the Top 500 overall Louisiana kids are ranked now:
#19 RHP William Schmidt [LSU commit]
#91 SS Michael Ryan [LSU commit]
#104 RHP Landon Victorian [LSU commit]
#150 SS Hayden Federico [Ole Miss commit]
#268 OF John Pearson [LSU commit]
#420 RHP Grant Breaux [LSU commit]
#475 OF Isaiah Shivers [Louisiana-Monroe commit]
This is the latest I've seen and it is from February. Maybe thinderbird can let us know if this has been updated recently. PG only allows the top 10 to be viewed unless you sign in.

I agree with you NIcholas. Trying to figure out what a 14 year old will do in college is difficult. I actually favor the portal over HS recruiting. Our two best pitchers, starting SS and top hitter all from the portal.
It's just easier to evaluate and find plug and play players. The negative is you don't get to court them as long and you don't know who will be available year to year. Not to mention they are one and done quite often,

Is Ruddell 100% gone or will he back next season
That home run he hit was a moonshot

That helps Baytiger.
I was browsing through the profiles again and had a few observations. Bateman is not thin at all. That is a really big leftie. You have to love the potential there. I hope he gets to campus.
I'm no pitching expert but Stunner Gonzales seems to have mechanics that will be hard to repeat consistently. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I'm liking Costello more and more. It's not much to go on but seems to have a lot of offensive potential.

He is a really big kid. Has been trending up pretty quick lately in prospect rankings.

I didn't see anything majorly concerning in the PG video. Leg kick was kind of big but it never look like he was not in control of it. Hard to really make any opinions off of 1 warm up session though. You have to like the 6-7 frame though. Kid has a lot of room to add weight.

I've read some good things lately to make you optimistic on what he can be. Hopefully he can come in and one day be really good.
If you can get out of this draft with only losing 4 high school guys that would be awesome. Griffin, Schmidt, Caminitti all looking like they will be 1st round guys and then only 1 of Arrambide, Curiel, Bateman, Fountain.
Posted on 5/20/24 at 7:26 pm to BayTiger13
I would love to get Arrambide. "generational arm talent and won the national HR derby." Good catchers are hard to find.
Bateman and Fountain have size you can't teach. Those two would be very exciting as well.
Curiel wouldn't make or break this class for me. Of course, I have been wrong before.

Three HCs were fired today. Only South Florida may offer anything in the portal. Jordan is already on some portal guys. I wonder if Houston makes a change soon too.
Posted on 5/21/24 at 7:27 am to N2daWild
I disagree on Curiel. Out of all the "maybe/maybe not" guys, he is the one I hope gets to campus most. He does not have very many holes in his game right now and is doing it at Orange Lutheran, which is a highly touted high school in California. He will have the ability to come in and compete for a starting spot next year. The reason he is dropping is because he does not have a ton of power at the moment, but he has a body that can maybe grow into some over the next couple years. His defense is top notch from everything I read and he has very good hit for average and gap to gap power. I think a good comp would be Antoine Duplantis but more advanced and more pop coming out of high school.
Fountain sounds like he is very similar to Ethan Frey when it comes to size and athleticism for that size. He broke the Nebraska high school HR record in 3 years. I think a comp to Frey is accurate but as I said with Curiel, he seems more advanced than Frey did coming out of high school. Mostly because Frey played football and was at a smaller Louisiana level school so it took longer for him to adjust to the college game and I think he is still adjusting.
Of course you want to get Arrambide here also. A lot of what I read is that he has some issues receiving and blocking behind the plate and has a ton of swing and miss and has tendencies to chase out the zone. Things that can be fixed for sure. It basically sounds like the same scouting report as Jared Jones had coming out of high school.

Portal OF to monitor: Robbie Burnett, UNC Asheville. Draft eligible.
Portal arms to monitor: David Stitch, Angelo State and Jackson Phipps, South Carolina.
Also keep an eye on Ace Reese from Houston. If Houston makes a coaching change, he's going to be a popular target.
