I know it’s not the SEC but that UNC catcher gives me hope that a freshman can come in and be serviceable at the least. Besides, Tennessee showed you can win games with a below average catcher and I don’t expect Arrambide to be as bad as Cal Stark. Think he only threw out 5 base runners on the whole season and barely hit .200.

I say all that to say this…I’m secretly pulling for Arrambide to win the job, not just for 2025 but to have another experienced bat in the lineup come 2026. I’m banking we can be contenders in 2025 while also loading up on experience for a 2026 run.

I don’t think they need another C either. Your 3rd is basically an emergency guy. The barometer has been set pretty low for the position. Can you catch the ball? Ok, you can start. Whether Priester or Arrambide hit right away doesn’t really matter all that much as long as they can catch.

Jones is going to play 1B, not sure why you’d risk him getting hurt at C. Frey is interesting as someone that could expand his current role in hopes to see more playing time, though.

We should have a much better idea come fall ball on who they think they can work with behind the plate.

Offensively I am not expecting much from the catcher position this season. What I hope for is someone who can handle the pitching staff well and someone who can hit .240ish but with pop. I think both Priester and Arrambide can give you that offensively. If they give you more than that is great.

That simple fundamental has proven to be much more difficult than you’d expect at LSU.

I think we have all the catchers Jay needs on the team now. With Priester/Arrambide you probably feel good about those 2

I agree. Out of high school two years ago, Jones was the 4 ranked catcher in the nation by perfect game and Frey was 12. Either of them could handle that IF needed. We had Neal back there a good bit this year and he struggled to catch the ball. I honestly think with the 6+ guys on the roster who can catch, we will be just fine. As much as I like to see a defensive catcher back there, Jay will play whoever hits the best while being serviceable back there.

They had a great run at C for about 25yrs & it has been kinda lost the last few.

I’m hoping Arrambide can be a legitimate 2-3yr starter & reset that standard to where it should be.

Both Arrambide and Priester will be fine behind the plate. They'll have to hit a little bit, though. Jay will stick somebody else back there if he thinks it provides more offense. The precedent was set when he wouldn't play Milazzo until he got a pulse at the plate. He'll keep working with the better defenders to hit but he won't just let them play without offering something on offense.

The good thing is you basically have 6 interchangeable parts for C/1B/DH with Jones, Frey, Hernandez, Yamin, Priester, and Arrambide so it should be very easy to play the 3 who earn it and the positions will work themselves out.

I think Jones will get looks in the fall to let scouts see him in other spots. But when the games start for real, he's in ink at 1st base.

I know Jay likes to tinker and work guys in, but he likes having a certain amount of guys written in ink too.

Agreed. Jones will catch and play some 3B in the fall. And, I know Jay says it isn't off the table...and really, nothing is ever off the table bc you never what's going to happen (injuries, etc)...but Jones will be at 1B.

I listened to the Jay interview with Mikie. Spoken about a few pages back. I don’t think Jones will play anything but 1B when the actual games start, based on his actual tone.

We all agree on that. Was just something fun to discuss now that the portal is done. Wish fall ball started tomorrow…

Hey Tutko quick question…when does CJJ do that press conference where he talks about the signing class and specifically each individual player???

Unless Jay and Jared had private conversations re: a position change to entice him to stay (and thus setting a high $ figure for the draft), there's no reason to move him off 1B at this point. We got Priester and Arrambide to campus and both Dickinson and Braswell look primed to handle the left side. Maybe if the catchers struggle in the first month while one of the 1B/DH guys lights it up, you try Bear at catcher to open up 1B? But even then, you probably just stick one of the guys who's caught in college before back there first. Or Frey.

In the past it's usually happened after the draft signing deadline. So sometime in August would be my guess.

Soooo…now what do we do? Don’t really feel like going to the football recruiting thread. Those guys are out of their minds. And the rant is only fun for in game threads. Feels like we got nothing to talk about until the fall…

Summer ball, stat crunching for portal and juco guys, and seemingly endless line up permutations.

My particular favorite line up possibility to put all the power bats at their upper extreme on the defensive spectrum and see what it looks like. It's the slow pitch softball approach.

C - Hernandez
1B - Schmidt
2B - Reeves
3B - Jones
SS - Dickinson
LF - Yamin
CF - Brown
RF - Beck
DH - Costello
