Missed Jake Brown being added to the list at #93. Surprised Kade Anderson doesn’t get more draft hype

He hasn't pitched since his JR year when he went down with TJ. I'm not surprised at all. Figure that pretty much made him a lock to go to school.

I’ve got a dumb question. What’s up with SWLA and elite prep baseball? I know it’s been this way for decades, but I can’t understand why there is so much talent consistently in such a small area. According to MaxPreps, 3 of the top 15 high school baseball teams are within 30 minutes of each other.

Anxiously awaiting the rest of the assignments. Plan on making a few trips out to the cape this summer

It's a good question. I grew up in this area and it wasn't like this 30 years ago. Just about all anyone cared about was football. I think when Glenn Cecchini and Barbe got rolling in the 90s, it showed other schools it could be done in a football crazed area and the popularity grew and grew. More and more athletic kids were drawn to baseball. And I don't have any connection to Barbe. Just giving credit where think it is due.

Thanks P.

Would you expect Tanks to make it up here this summer or is there Team USA stuff he'd be playing in?

I'm guessing Team USA, but he wasn't there last year which I thought was weird.

Yea you'd think he would wanna get some cuts in with wood bat before his draft year. Altho i think Team USA still allows you to use wood if you prefer.

Pretty sure the collegiate Team USA team uses wood bats for their summer season.

couple reasons

1) unlike a lot of the rest of the state, there is a big emphasis on it, but in tournament ball most kids are still almost forced to play football and other sports and do not specialize until high school

2) emphasis on extreme hard work around here when it comes to baseball. kids see the tradition at barbe, sam houston, sulphur, st louis and the smaller powers and they see what it takes. they start hanging around the programs early and they see the dedication so they start doing it.

3) because of the above, kids train year around for it. notice i didnt say play year around as the travel teams in SWLA tend to play less overall games than many other areas but tend to train and practice more. lot more emphasis on training than playing

4) because these kids see what it takes many start strength and conditioning early, very early with many starting at 7 & 8 even. they also work around the house a lot and see how big they actually need to be.

for a metro area of 250k its insance. 6 teams from calc parish in the semi plus kinder and south beau. over 20 d1 prospects and prolyl another 25 going to play juco or d2/d3.

also prolly the biggest factors is awesome coaching. Barbe, St Louis and Sam Houston have amazign coaching. these coaches understand the importance of the off season and run year around weight lifting, they run off season velo/long toss programs, run bat speed programs etc etc. there is a huge focus on development and its tracked. all the schools above have their own pitching coach, own hitting coach and coaches that really really beleive in the weights. look at the size of many of the kids compared to other schools. its very very evident when st louis plays, only stm was as big really. in 5a less so once you are deep in playoffs but district games....very obvious.

so combo of things...high level coaching, elite work ethic and tradition/passion for the game.

oh and the 3 are within 10 miles of each other and st louis is within that 10 mile radius too.

some what but sam houston coming on with the 2000 class was a big deal. westlake and st louis and sulphur all had good programs in the 90s with westlake and st louis winning ships along with barbe. plenty of talent came out too of those schools.

sam houston getting the right coaching helped a ton and then sulphur usually has tons of talent, but this class is special. if they get politics out of hiring next coach....they could become legit powerhouse year in and year out like they have been last 2 years.

Summer ball will do Kling a lot of good. I think he’s been overthinking things at the plate and shooting himself in the foot. If he can just go out there and play I can see him really taking off.

Unfortunately Sulphur will never get politics out of the way of sports. It’s just handed down through the generations…….
I fear they will be way down when this group of seniors leave.

New 2023 RHP out of Georgia on the radar: Luke Wiltrakis. His PG profile shows him as a 3B, so I’m wondering if he just popped up as a pitching prospect.

Wiltrakis committed to UGA about an hour ago.

I missed this in the thread, but yeah that list of players has had some turnover. I need to add a couple names to it and take some off. I'll probably update on Friday or something.
