Project, if Gavin is going to pitch, do you think we go after a big time SS transfer next year?

I think it’s a near certainty we go after a middle infielder in the portal. They won’t want to go into next season with mostly freshmen, a juco, and a part time pitcher competing at those 2 spots. They’ll want experience.

i think we almost 100% go after big time MIF in portal, especially with thompson prolly not making it to campus now.

but I would be surprised if Gavin did not go back to SS after this year. Not saying he will win it, but he is a big time leader who would fit perfect there. has to get hitting better though.

thing is with pitching is, he is doign whatever it takes to help the team win, thats how he is.

Jake Brown is same way, if he comes in and they need him to play field more than pitching he can do that. Dont think that will happen cause he is an absolute unit on the mound but that is the type of athlete he is and its been mentioned that Jay has talked to him about possible 2 way just like they did with Gavin.

What Jay is doing is bringing in stud pitchers who are also the best overall player and athlete on the team.

but to answer your question, i absolutely think he goes after SS & 2nd in portal, maybe more than 1 now that thompson=juco more than likely.

Watched a video of Bennet fryman. It’s 95 from the left side. He also went deep at the plate. Currently committed to Navarro

my ideal situation would be to land a stud SS transfer and have Gavin be the second baseman then possibly transition to SS as a Jr if said SS transfer is a one year guy.

Johnson recruited 3 guys who had played SS from the portal last year and he had Thompson returning, I think he will try the same this year. Middle inf is very much unsettled if Thompson goes to the draft

With the more definite portal timeframe this year, it's harder to get an early word on who may be in it.

And the coaching carousel hasn't started up yet.

I honestly don't see any SEC schools changing coaches this offseason. Big 12 looks like it might be decently stable as well. The PAC 12 had turnover the last couple years, so I don't know if they're going to churn much either. I don't know as much on the ACC front, I haven't looked much.

And if the Big 12 and SEC (and potentially the ACC) don't have much movement, it means there won't be much movement at the top of the Sunbelt, CUSA, and the American. There could be some Big West coaching turnover, but the conference isn't as loaded as it used to be. I like the Freshman shortstop at Cal Poly though.

So then it's individuals making a decision vs a macro factor, and that's a lot harder to predict.

I wonder if Luke Hill at Arizona St is one to at least monitor just based on hometown. .343 with a .900 OPS and .421 OBP starting all 38 games

He's one to keep an eye, but we had contact with him after he decommitted from Tulane (with Jay here) and he went to ASU. I don't really see any reason for him to leave there either.

One of the Cecchini's told my friend that Jake Brown is the best high school pitcher he has ever seen. With high praise like that, seems like he's destined for the mound.

JUCO INF on the radar: Shane Juday, LHH INF from Lansing CC in Michigan. He's an older JUCO guy with 3 years experience. In the box scores I've looked at, he's played 1B, 2B, and 3B.

Let’s wait until the All American lists come out and then let Jay work.

I mean, the staff isn't waiting. I'm not just pulling these names out of thin air.

New MLB.com draft prospect list didn’t change a whole lot for our HS prospects. Johnson and Mitchell moved up a little, Milam still the only other signee on the list in the top 150.

I've read where Mitchell isn't expected to last past the 20th pick.

If I had to take a stab at draft sweats right now:

Mitchell - no chance
Johnson - little to no chance
Milam - 50/50
Larson - 50/50

I feel good about everyone else.

Yeah I expect Mitchell to be a top 20 pick. Elite HS catching prospect with just about every tool you want at a premium position in the draft. Oh well.
