People think they will run it back at SS,
last 16 games he only had 2 errors. Is it really that big of an assumption that thompson will be back at shortstop?

I agree that they will be good, but the staff isn't going to hinge their 2023 success on getting two infielders to school and having two starting true freshman in the infield.
Again if you can have two proven hitters with experience who defend well then it's a no brainer to me. No team in the country would choose to have a freshman SS over a Big 12 SS who hit over .300. It's the new age of college baseball and you better use the portal and I think that's what they will do.

agree with you, im just telling you the thinking based on what they are seeing.
if you can get a starting SS from a power schoolr or even 2nd/3rd that hit 300+ then im sure they will go after him. But i havent seen any of those guys either.

Washington's coach retired and Kelly is on the list of potential replacements.

I'm not saying not to do it if the opportunity to get 2 good IF transfers comes up that are the right guys that are both interested in coming to LSU. Guess what I'm trying to say is I don't think that situation will present itself. If it does, great. The more competition the better. Johnson and his staff will then have to do the hard part in making the necessary roster management moves.

I believe that guy is Jack Pineda at the moment. He's exactly that. a .300 hitting SS

That's fair. I was more operating under the complete opposite assumption. LSU has to be a top 10 (at worst) destination for guys looking to transfer. I think there will be plenty of interest coming our way, you definitely have to get the right guys and not just any guys, 100%.

If that opportunity presented itself, he'd be gone in a heart beat.

Just based on it being a P5 job that he's been at and the itch to be a head coach?
Or, and I really hesitate to want to ask, something else?

I haven't heard of any ruffled feathers. Just sounds like it would be a perfect fit for him. And, I really hate to say it, but we'd be fine with another pitching coach.
Posted on 6/13/22 at 1:29 pm to DRock88
If that happens, send the brinks truck to Hattiesburg
Posted on 6/13/22 at 1:32 pm to Gnash
I'd be fine with that. Or Austin; or Nashville. Lots of good PC's out there.

100%. He may be getting his shot at a HC job soon.

If Kelly leaves offer coach O from USM the same $ Kelly was getting maybe slightly more. He can't be making that much at USM, plus it's like 2 hours away from where he is now.
I think if that happens LSU could get P Tanner Hall.

why not? You have two pretty big holes between SS/2B/3B
Romero and Guidry project middle infield, yes? Or am I dreaming to think they are day one starters if they come?
Posted on 6/13/22 at 2:17 pm to BayouPride
They are MIF. You are just hinging on a lot of what ifs at the moment. Do they make it? Are they as day 1 ready as they project when they start facing live pitching? I just don't think you hinge your offseason on hoping they can be your day 1 starters and never look back. IF they are good enough to come in and beat out experienced players, then awesome.

I see it differently, if, and it is a big if admittedly, but if you think Guidry and Romero will be studs in June of 2023 then cut your teeth with them from day one. No reason to rob them of reps. Romero and Guidry are multi-year players not stop-gaps.

Yeah, I like that

you get those reps in the fall. There's a 0% reason to assume they will be freshman AA type players in year 1. What if they're not? You playing Safford and Cranford next year? Not a chance. Experience wins more than not at this age of college baseball. Use the portal and get the best players to help you win immediately. No competent baseball staff is going to operate assuming two freshman (that might not make it) are your missing pieces. They will certainly help but you will need to address it beforehand.

He had a total regression from year 1 to year 2. And he wasn’t the only player. So no I don’t have a ton of faith to just write him in Y3.
I thought he would improve as a soph but Johnson’s lack of commitment to defense did not allow that.
