Pretty sure Kevin Gausman was our last top 20 player outside of Crews

I think for position players it's just Crews and Kling. Bregman was probably a top 20 guy if not for his injury. That just highlights Kling's talent.

Bregman wasn't even top 20. (42)
Crews was 13
Gausman was 17
Kling was 19
Crews was 13
Gausman was 17
Kling was 19

That's a really weird list.
Which would suggest that freshmen starting is as much about team needs as it is about individual talent level. In this case, there will be a position battle at catcher and one other position that is wide open. Whether that position is 2B or LF is going to depend on a lot of factors.
Can White play 3B adequately? If not, he’ll need to move to 1B or DH, shifting Morgan or Skenes to LF. That would favor Guidry stepping in to play one of the IF positions along with Thompson and Dugas. Likewise if Dugas is struggling in the IF, he would shift back to LF leaving an IF spot for Guidry. Someone like Jobert or Beloso hitting well and needing a spot in the lineup would also fill LF either directly or indirectly.
All that is to say that most of the potential pieces suggest the need is more likely to be in the IF than OF. I think Kling only starts ahead of Guidry if he is hitting better than Guidry, Jobert and Beloso AND both White and Dugas stick at 3B and 2B. Now, if both players assert themselves as starters, then someone else like Pearson could wind up the odd man out. More likely you’ll see a lot of rotation in and out.
ETA add: I don’t think Pearson’s starting spot is truly in danger nor do I see him in any way as a weak link. I just used him as an example of a player who might end up losing some playing time if both Kling and Guidry play so well that they earn starting spots. I don’t think that’s the most likely scenario as evidenced by the fact the majority of the post was focused on Kling vs Guidry for the last starting spot. Even in that scenario I see there being a rotation if you also read my last sentence. Skenes, Thompson, Dugas, Pearson, Kling and Guidry would all get some off days such that all would play more than half the time.

Not LSU related but it is college baseball related. Tadlock and TTU are getting ripped right now. He supposedly pulled 6 incoming freshman’s money on 8/2 giving them less than a month to find a landing spot.

Pearson will be in the lineup against RHP. The opening in the OF could be against LHP.

Pearson will be in the lineup every game he’s healthy from now until he gets drafted and leaves. I just can’t imagine him regressing and it would take that happening for him to not start a game.
He’s not bad in the field and his bats obviously very good ,for his age especially.

Pearson hit LH pretty good last year, had at least 2HR off of them, and I want to say a 3rd
Posted on 8/8/22 at 11:44 am to Lester Earl
I said could. Just bc he hit them well this year doesn't mean he will next year. And, we have RHs to go to now that we really didn't last year.
ETA: I don't even know if what you're saying is true. Hardly anyone hit LHP well last year.

Absolutely. Jay said last year that Pearson reminded him of Berry as a freshman.

Shocking that Kendall hasn’t said anything about this

There may be some issues with the veracity of the claims.
This Butch Baccala guy had Jay on his podcast earlier this year and then not too long ago was shitting on him for recruiting the portal.

I’m thinking of Jobert, not Pearson. Had several HRs vs LHP
Posted on 8/8/22 at 12:25 pm to Lester Earl
Not sure Jobert isn't still mulling over a free agent deal. I know word was he passed up money in the draft, but that seemed really weird.
Posted on 8/8/22 at 12:31 pm to DRock88
He passed up money on Day 2, which could have been low ball offers. There's a possibility of getting more as a UDFA. They can go up to $125k without using pool money.
