He will stay at Grand Canyon.

At this point I don't think you have very many options from the portal that can be a serious contributor in the infield as far as pushing starting guys. I'm good with Dugas 2B, Thompson SS, and White 3B with Guidry pushing them all. Simon is the wild card. Maybe now that the signing deadline is over Johnson may have a legit press conference to go over the signing class and take questions going into fall. May be able to get someone to ask about Simon's status. At this point I think any portal addition will be the same boat as Merrifield and just be a depth pick up. Problem with that is I wouldn't imagine many kids are in the portal to go somewhere to be a backup. I think we will end up having to ride with what we have for now. Johnson will likely have to keep an eye on next year portal infield candidates because 2024 will be more of a problem on the infield than 2023.

I'm dreaming a little too big with Wilson. Hopefully Simon is healthy, Thompson improves and we still have Guidry as well. That's three guys that can compete for SS and I'm confident this staff will add some depth if nothing else.

I may have missed it but is Nippolt not an option?

He is. I think people are overreacting bc we need something to worry about

There’s a kid named Gavin Guidry who is an adequate shortstop last I heard. Maybe he can play a little there if needed?

It seems like a great SS and Catcher is more difficult to get than a great pitcher. Anxious to see what CJJ has up his sleeve for our middle INF.

Just curious but I wonder how much $ the SS from Kansas got to go to Tennessee?

I'm a little worried about the Simon rumors. MBeloso mentioned we were short on infielders and that was before the Carter Young news. We are 4 over the 35 and Jay says we are in good shape. That means 4 of those guys will not be playing in 2023. I know there have been rumors about Simon, Beloso and Hellmers. I also think Primeaux could be a freshmen redshirt candidate, just because the pitching numbers are high. That being said, I don't put a lot of faith in rumors on TD.

Hellmers and Simon won't be back.

It's Guidry time.

I agree. I hope he gets a chance to start next year but he needs to be on a short leash. A lot of his E’s were routine grounders.

I'm not sure if he was serious but I believe Naptime said he got $200,000. Maybe he was just being sarcastic.

We lost Pineda, Young, Romero, Doughty, Cranford, Simon (maybe), Bianco and Nippolt and Merrifield probably won't cut it as SS in the SEC.

That's a little concerning. Thompson was inconsistent and Guidry is a freshman, not to mention injuries happen. I'm not freaking out but I'm assuming we will be looking for a good enough glove to play SS.

Obviously you hope Thompson or Guidry step up, but you can’t limit yourself to 2 SS on your roster.

Nah, it’s pretty clear Johnson wanted to upgrade defensively at SS and it hasn’t worked. Now you either hope Thompson improves drastically or a true freshman handles the transition well enough to take the position. Neither is an ideal scenario going into the Fall.

I agree, and I don't call that overreacting. Yet Toptigerfan86 is getting upvoted and I'm getting downvoted. I feel like I'm on the Rant lol.

tough crowd I guess.

Ya, rn MIF is a rotation of Thompson, Guidry and Merrifield.

Doable, but thin.

ETA: it is noteworthy that Thompson freshman year there were I think 5 SEC starting freshman shortstops.

Guidry can flat out play. Not as worried about him as some others may be.

Are we assuming Noot is coming to LSU since all has been quiet today?

I don’t think it’s clear he wanted to upgrade, it’s clear he wanted depth. We’re one injury away from not having a SS with college experience on our roster.

I think it’s clear he wanted an upgrade but it didn’t work out. He was not expecting Pineda and Young to go pro. He is gonna have to grab two infielders for depth now and go with Guidry and Thompson in the middle infield.

Pineda and/or Young would have been defensive upgrades over an infield with Thompson, White, and Dugas. Thompson, White, and Dugas may be worse than we had last year with Berry, Thompson, and Doughty. I know Guidry factors in but you're still not in a very good defensive situation on the infield unless White and/or Dugas really transform, Thompson pops, and/or Guidry is a day 1 dude.

ETA: I will say that I don't think a healthy Guidry will be a liability, even as a true freshman. The rest of the infield options could all be liabilities.

We are all Guidry fans now. Guidry taking the SS position and running with it would be nice. He's certainly athletic enough to man it defensively.

I'm not gonna freak out if Thompson is the starter, but we need to see improvement from him...which shouldn't be hard after how bad he was defensively last year.

I will be surprised if Jay doesn't add some SS depth from somewhere though.
