OK but we are talking about living in present day USA. 650K gross after taxes and agent fees is hardly life changing...
The 650k isn't gross. The post was in reference to Kennedy who signed for $1MM. The 650k is the net number. And to a lot of the people presented with the opportunity to sign a pro baseball contract, it is life changing.

I’m curious if using the portal for additional leverage is going to continue to happen. It doesn’t seem to be as effective as these guys thought. In reality, they don’t gain much more leverage.

This was a topic before and shortly after the draft on the Baseball America podcast, since they did a transfer ranking already.
Guys like Reggie Crawford and Jordan Sprinkle were specifically mentioned. But they talked generally about the SEC because a lot of the draft eligible guys that were seemingly committing for leverage were committing to SEC schools.
And it didn't just affect draftees. Tennessee had a portal catcher that signed UDFA instead, but signed for more than the $125k. So his bonus cuts into the pool for the team that signed him. The leverage worked for him, but probably not for Tebrake.

I don't think the guy from Creighton was using LSU as leverage. We were a back up plan in case he didn't get drafted. He was signing regardless that was evident from his interviews.

I don’t think it was a leverage play either. Guys like Tebrake & the Baylor SS don’t really have much to gain.
If Carter Young were coming from a smaller program, yea I think he could gain some leverage. He has a year to play with.
All together, college players do not have much leverage at all.

I was glad Tebrake was upfront about it. He openly said that he was going pro and LSU was his backup plan.

I was always under the impression that college players had a good amount of leverage if they had eligibility left, especially if it was multiple years like a draft eligible sophomore. Is that not the case?

Watching the signing charts as i have been, he's still lucky to get what he got. Go look at the round 8, 9, 10 signings. A buuunch of guys signing in those round for $7,500, $5,000, $2,500, even $1,000

They do and if they are good enough, they still have plenty of leverage after year 4. Rocker went underslot but still got a lot more than people thought, Mark Appell went for full slot and #1 overall. I’m sure there are more cases, but those are obvious ones. Kramer and Freeman got a lot more than they would have if they left after their junior year too.

Since Tebrake had the ability to come back for one year, he had some negotiability whereas the guys signing for $1 to 5K have no eligibility left and it’s a “take it or quit playing baseball” situation.

The leverage spoken about is that vs a player without eligibility left, who has none.
There is very little bargaining leverage with their pro team.

A college senior has no leverage at all.
A college junior has some but not much. It's smart to sign as a junior if you can for two reasons. 1) Larger signing bonus 2) Get your pro career started earlier.

650k minus federal and state taxes (32+%) = 430k
430k minus agent fees (5-10%) = 387k
Misc expenses (say 5% as a VERY conservative est) = 367k
Come home with 367k that doesn't include a car, clothes, retirement, other things.
I'm sorry but 367k is not Life Changing....it's a really good amount to get started.
