I can't wait to learn more about the signing bonuses when made available. After the first 20 picks, undershot deals must have been in high demand.

I understand the over signing because the draft is a crapshoot. The part I don’t like is the selling of false goods as an insurance policy

I agree with that.
I don't know what Jay's conversations are like with fringe roster guys.
I'm pretty comfortable saying the other school I referenced is very upfront with where guys stand and isn't selling false goods, based on what I know about their conversations with guys.

I feel like that is where Travinski is at. With the portal deadline being before the draft it is hard to make a decision based on what will be best the next year. Travinski very well could have contributed as a catcher next year if Neal and Jones signed like it could have gone. However, I don't think anyone expected to get all 3 and now you are kind of stuck with 5 guys at catcher. Good problem to have for the team and program. Bad problem if you are a fringe player and also puts the coach in a bad spot. I'm sure he doesn't want that to be a problem consistently. I feel like it will drive kids away if a coach is constantly over populating the lineup and making last minute cuts to it. Not a good way to go about building the program in my opinion. Will eventually catch up.
Not saying that is what Johnson is doing. It is a tough spot this season with covid players still there and also trying to bring players in to win now to fix recruiting classes from the previous staff. I would not expect it to be like this each year with the portal and having to process/cut as many as it looks like Jay will have to.

Steve Robertson from the State 247 board has said that Skenes will visit Arkansas this week and is apparently "taking other visits" including one to Oregon State, which is interesting. Might be a little while on this one.

The draft moving up would help.
Or the portal deadline moving back.
But the entire industry, except for Rob Manfred, wants the draft moved up. Front offices, scouts, writers, college coaches, fricking everyone hates the draft being this late. But Rob Manfred, in his attempt to ruin everything baseball related, wants it late.

The guys that will get cut will have to be able to immediately transfer anywhere, right? Is there precedent with that?
Posted on 7/20/22 at 11:46 am to ProjectP2294
By the time these guys sign, there will be less than a month less of time in the minor league season too. So almost no point in draftees playing. It’s kind of dumb all around.

I dont know how that rule works now. But i know when PM did it when he got here, those guys transferred immediately. Jt wise comes to mind as does jared bogany. They went to oklahoma and arizona st

Doolittle (from Florida) left after fall ball because he wasn't the starting catcher. Had high expectations. Not sure what he amounted to.

They would either have to go down a level or get a waiver to be eligible immediately at a D1 school.
I would guess anyone with JUCO eligibility remaining would go that route. Doesn't require a waiver and resets the recruiting process with a longer time frame.
I would hope that if we're pushing guys out late, that we're helping get waivers if needed. I don't know what that process looks like though and if the departing school has any effect on the outcome.
Otherwise it's going D2, D3 (unlikely), or NAIA. In Louisiana, NAIA probably makes the most sense.

He left after having to compete with Hunter Feduccia and Braden Doughty. Dude was super soft.
He went to Palm Beach Community College under the guise of re-entering the draft. He wasn't picked after that season. He later committed to Appalachian State but signed with the Nationals after being drafted in the 18th round after his sophomore JUCO season. He retired from baseball before the 2 games into the 2021 season, after 15 total minor league games.

It is a bad situation all around. All because Manfred wants it close to the All Star break to try and incorporate it for money purposes when not very many professional baseball fans give 2 shits about it. The college fans track the draft much more than professional fans. They will have to do something to fix it. To me, the portal deadline should be the same date as the signing deadline.
That just brings problems to finding a place to play and getting enrolled in school. It's just a complete cluster when having the draft this late.

Did Skenes visit LSU and A&M before the CNT tour? If so, I’m moving on.
Posted on 7/20/22 at 12:09 pm to lsu711
If Naptime is correct, don’t think he’s visited LSU yet.

Naptime is correct. He will visit LSU last

That can't be a bad thing. Fresh in his mind when making the decision.
