HUDL
Athletic Background

Also plays basketball. Averaged 12.5 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game as a sophomore on the hardwood.
2020: Went both ways for a Green Wave team that went 7-2 and made second round of state playoffs. Started at QB. Accounted for 1,582 yards of offense and 13 touchdowns passing for 10 more.

Top247 prospect Jacoby Mathews played safety for the loaded Bootleggers defense but he could very well grow into a linebacker at the next level. He has immense potential given his long frame and ability to scan the field.
quote:
In the October update, the Ponchatoula (La.) High School standout came in at No. 162 overall in the Top247, which also put him 13th nationally among 2022 safety prospects. Safe to say he will ascend in the next 2022 update. Mathews excelled at The SHOW in late December to earn a spot among the top performers at the event. He followed that with another stellar performance about a month later at the Battle Miami tournament. In the 6-foot-1, 205-pound range, Mathews' strong junior campaign included impressive snaps on both sides of the ball, and he's already been known for his bounce on the basketball floor. Mathews is classified to the safety position for now, but admittedly seems like a good fit as a potential back-seven hybrid player, or perhaps even a more traditional off-ball linebacker in the long term, depending on his continued physical development. Mathews has reported about 30 offers, including Florida, LSU, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, and numerous others.

What's the chances we land this kid?

he's talked a good bit about leaving the state.

And he's one of the most important. He's a game changing talent on defense.

What I've heard from my peeps in Ponchatoula is that he'll be a Tiger.

It was also very heavily discussed that Chase was only going to go out of state.. sometimes things change these are 17-18 year olds. Regardless O and staff are going to need to full court press on this one

Damn, louisiana is absolutely loaded in the 2022 class. I know we always put out alot of talent, but this class is deep as fuk.

I like our chances over anyone else. For as much shite as Tangipahoa parish gets for kids leaving the state (Amite), almost all of the elite talent comes to LSU. Hank Tierney is his coach who also coached Mickey Joseph at Shaw. That’s a big factor.

To be fair he was, committing to multiple oos schools in the process. A few different factors changed the course. Van Pran had that plan as well and stuck with it though we made him think quite a bit before he fully signed off. Same with Jerry Tillery though he was primarily focused on one particular school he was a legacy of. Some stick and leave some don't. Long way to go.
I'm just glad Mathews isnt being compared to Kaine Williams who had much hype at this point in his recruitment. Mathews is so much more versatile. And just better. Christian Harris is a more apt comparison for Mathews or Derrick Davis probably moreso.

LSU offered way back before anyone else. That holds weight with him for sure.

You think so? Hope you’re right!

I'm the most optimistic fan you'll ever meet and even i have major doubts about our ability to pull Matthew's given his comments about wanting to go OOS. Hope my gut is wrong!

Just something I heard him say. Things change so who knows, but LSU will be in it until the end. I have no true inside sauces, but do know people who are close to the situation. He’ll visit others and entertain offers but don’t count us out.

Mickey joseph having a relationship with his coach is great for lsu.

quote:I saw Harris when they hosted Mandeville in 2018, and he dominated in all three phases like no one else I've seen in the last three years.
Matthews just seems like he is on a different level than christian harris.
I don't remember Matthews being a factor on defense against Mandeville the last three years, and last year as QB he was complementary to their big RB, who was impossible to tackle.
Based on my limited exposure to both players (I have not watched any film), I would not say that Matthews is on another level.
