re: Is Walker Howard better than his dad was as a HS Sr? How does he compare to Arch Manning?

Walker is a superb athlete. Can run, and throw. Very smooth. Saw in person. His Dad could throw, and that was it...

Jamie was an excellent athlete and a very good baseball player.
But that does not always translate into being a great SEC caliber QB.
You are right about Howard being drafted in the second round of the draft for baseball and he was very good as a young player.
But remember Josh Booty? He was the first baseball draft pick (and first million dollar HS signee, IIRC) and a higher rated football player than Jamie. Terrific athlete.
Neither were elite college QBs.

Just a reminder that Josh Booty was an all SEC QB

STM has a family football practice at 7:30 am every year that they go see into the playoffs. Yesterday Walker and Jamie were standing on the 35 yard line throwing the ball trying to see who could hit the crossbar on the goal post. I think Jamie hit it first, then Walker, then Jamie. That was 3 times in a row they hit it.
Make no mistake about it, Jamie still has a cannon for an arm at 48 (or however old he is).

Jamie Howard was a great athlete. He also must have the mental fortitude that is out of this world. That dude has been through some shite. He will always be one of my favorite players. Also, Walker is legit, right now at this moment, he is better than Arch.

Jamie is just an all around great dude that has lost his wife to cancer and done an incredible job being a rock with his kids. Walker is a refection of that love from both of his parents. Jamie’s dad was a notorious hothead that caused his son a lot of grief.
it is sort of unfair to compare them in high school, jamie played in a pro style offense with a FB and a TE and a lot of Two Wides. Jamie’s OC Leland Padgett played WR at Tech and loved to throw it but STM was traditional back then. Walker is in a spread with elite QB coaching that showcases his abilities far more than Jamie got in HS.
Physically I would say their arms are about the same with walker being a bit faster running the ball. STM has a high level Strength program so Walker is finely tuned for football. so he is far more prepared physically and mentally to step in and compete at LSU.
They are both physically and mentally tough, just warriors
I think that baseball was good overall for Jamie but Walker specializes in football so he is more accurate with just more reps.
when jamie pitched, the ball would sizzle, it was audible in the stands and the catchers mitt sounded like a .410 shotgun going off

This happened back in January, but I took highlights of Walker (Jr year) and Arch (So. year) and simply compared arm strength/distance.
Walker's longest throw in the air (from release in the backfield to WR catch) was 55 yards. Arch's longest was 50. They both may have increased that with growth.
FWIW, I remember Steve Young throwing the ball 55 yds in an NFLQB Challenge, so Walker was already there as a junior.

I hope he’s a lot better. I was at the five pick six game in person against Auburn. I hope he’s much better than his dad because his dad sucked in college.

From what I have seen:
Very similar physical skill set between the two (sting arms and quick on their feet)
Walker is more polished at this point due to 7x7, camps , and his high school offense.
Walker may have more upside bc he won’t be distracted during the summer with pro baseball. Most forget or don’t know that Jamie played all summer with the Braves minor leagues. This stunted his football development.
Walker won’t have to deal with Lynn Amedee.

Who cares. No manning will ever play for LSU. The sooner you come to that realization the better off you’ll be.

One big difference between the two is that Walker seems to be very focused on football. Jamie Howard was always a dual-sport guy and was always heavily involved with baseball in the spring, which took away the time where a lot of individual coaching and technical work happens. He also had the misfortune to play under a bad staff for 3 years.
I will say this- the older Howard focused on football his last spring and senior season under DiNardo and it made a big difference. He was much more efficient and took better care of the ball. I always appreciated how he improved and really became a leader on that team. I just hate that he got hurt and didn’t get to finish the season.
Based on what Jamie showed in 1995 and his dual-sport ability, the talent is probably a wash. However, I think Walker will likely show up more polished as a QB than his father was because of his focus on football, which should help him reach his potential sooner. I’m excited to see what he can do.

Walker Howard is better than Jamie and better that Arch Manning who is actually overrated because of his last name.

Jamie wasn’t very mobile to my recollection…. those were some dark days, but I recall him being a pretty big recruit. He was drafted by the Braves out of high school also I think.

Remember that Auburn game with Jaime at the helm
