Interesting Butch Davis quote(LSU recruiting in the 90's)

Bruce Feldman wrote a long article on Davis and the aftermath of the UNC scandal. This one line caught my eye
For anybody who really followed recruiting back then, is that true? I know the exposure is a lot greater now, but I have a hard time believing Ed Reed and Reggie Wayne were in this state and not being looked at by LSU.
quote:
"A significant amount of the first-rounders and other top players we recruited were actually not high-profile recruits," Davis said. "At Miami, it was rare if we were ranked in the top 20 in recruiting. We'd get a Santana Moss that no one else offered a scholarship to or a Reggie Wayne or an Ed Reed who we only had to beat Tulane or Grambling or Nicholls State for. LSU didn't want them.

Ed Reed was a freaking beast in HS. Find it hard to believe LSU wasnt after him.

That's like Jameis wanting to go to Texas and UT wouldn't take his HS coach's telephone calls.

All I know is Curly wanted Marshall Faulk to be a DB.

I seriously doubt that he means that LSU wasn't looking at these guys. He just means LSU wasn't putting forth nearly the effort that they should have been, and I would tend to agree.

Yeah, he's posturing for the sake of his own ego.
Wayne and Reed were big-time players.

Everyone wanted him at DB. That's why he went to San Diego State.
Curley still sucks, though.

This is incorrect. Wayne was thought to be a strong lean to LSU and then ended up at Miami. This was a tough loss.
As for Reed, I don't think he ever seriously considered LSU. A number of NOLA kids were signing out of state and ignoring LSU.
At that time, Miami, FSU and TN had made strong inroads into LA and were scooping up major LA talent year after year. DiNardo halted the exodus (starting with Kevin Faulk) and Saban/Miles continued to keep most in-state talent.

Evaluation of kids back then was much much more difficult. And that's not even considering the effects of improved communication and data.
For example, when LSU was recruiting Rettig we:
A) could go look at his box scores and stat lines
B) within 8hrs of the game have someone telling us that his OL sucked.
This was impossible in the 80's, so yes... there were a lot of misses. Those that put in the work to go see kids to evaluate them in person did the best. Of course, the brand didn't hurt either. If you were Miami you had kids "under the radar" coming to see them looking for a scholly, and no one else got to see them. That's changed now too to a great extent.

In other words, LSU didn't have Nevin Shapiro hosting recruiting trips.

Or like Johnny Manziel wanting to go to UT...

LSU wanted both those guys, the state of the program didn't even have LSU on the radar unfortunately. NO players were not coming to LSU prior to Saban.

Amazing we're talking about Ed Reed as part of ancient history and he's still playing.

Pretty sure this is B.S.

This. He's insunuating that he (miami) did more homework than even the home team to uncover these diamonds in the rough. It's laughable.

LSU prior to Saban.
Dinardo actually started peaking the interest of our instate kids. Saban had some talent when he started here. Dinardo's first stop was to Carencro, LA. Kevin Faulk made it cool to go to LSU again.

The turning point of the program.

This.
People forget that Dinardo left Saban some great players to build a program. Bradie James was a parade All American and was a big time get for Dinardo

Yes, in the case of Reed several SEC schools were after him, including LSU. At least he is a bad example.

If LSU showed no interest in these guys it was because they knew they were locks to TheU.
