Kind of easy to recruit for Butch Davis considering everywhere he's been has ended up in hot water with the NCAA. Reed and Wayne were paid and you can take that to the bank!

I went to Destrehan, 2 years older than Ed. Ed Reed wasn't as highly as recruited as you would think. He was great, don't get me wrong, but he wasn't a can't miss guy like a Fournette or a Noil. No one would have guessed that he would be one of the greatest players in the history of college and pro football. He was ranked somewhere around the 10th best player in Louisiana that year. He really didn't have the measurables at either the corner or safety positions, he was sort of a tweener. Of course, hindsight is always 20/20.

LSU fail to land a lot of talent back then because they recruited players based on needs and not necessarily talent.
Example: LSU recruited the following players
1 Steve McNair - Tight End/ Def Back
2 Marshall Faulk - Defensive Back
3 Warrick Dunn - Defensive Back
4 Major Applewhite - Not Recruited
5 Travis Minor - Recruited but was higher on Harvey Williams.

the list goes on

Harvey Williams is about ten years older than Travis Minor. We didn't lay off the Gatorade national player of the year to recruit a 30 year old playing for the Chiefs

In other words, LSU didn't have Nevin Shapiro hosting recruiting trips.

I guess. I wouldn't have minded if some of those 90s teams were bending the rules a little though. It was the Wild West back then.

Ed Reed and Reggie Wayne was lured to Miami by none other than Tulane's own Curtis Johnson. He was the WR coach at Miami from 1996-2005 and his area of recruiting was of course New Orleans. He was your present day Frank Wilson at the time....

Oh and was responsible for getting Marshall Faulk to San Diego St. He was WR coach there from 1989–1993.

Everyone wanted him at DB. That's why he went to San Diego State.

Marshall is a smart MFer.

He looked around and talked to the people he trusted.

"I'd like to go to an SEC school, ideally LSU and be close to home. They all want me to play DB. I'm not above playing on defense, but I really enjoy running the ball. I'm one of the best HS players in the country. Is there anywhere I can go and play running back?"

One of the answers was SDSU. He looked at the total package - the weather, the location, the girls, the low stress and he would instantly become the best football player in the conference.

Easy call, in my book.

My dad was a Junior High basketball coach and one of his responsibilities was to scout for the High School Football team. Each Friday he would go on the road to watch the Team that Morgan City would be playing the next week. I still remember him coming home that Friday night after watching the Carver High School Rams. He just kept saying they got a kid that plays both ways and could beat Morgan City by himself.

NOLA in the 80's/90's was to Miami/FSU/TN what North La now is to Bama

PERSONAL: Born 9/11/78...graduated with a degree in liberal arts in May of 2001...full name is Edward Earl Reed...also a member of the Hurricane track and field team...chose Miami over LSU and Tulane...son of Edward and Karen Reed.

If I remember correctly he chose Miami because they gave him a shot at QB. He won top QB at an Elite 11 type QB camp his senior year.

Colorado won a split National Championship due to its New Orleans talent and I believe Notre Dame and Nebraska was profitable here too!

Some folks insist on focusing their lives on history...and why would people listen to a disgraced thug like Davis...yes, cheaters and crooks do well for a while, then they get caught like Davis did...but why not focus on the glorious present of LSU sports...this class of 2014 will set the program up for years of winning! "F" the past!

Always hated LSU, so it would have been a waste of time, anyway. Dude was born a gump (I knew him personally from 7th grade on).

5 Travis Minor - Recruited but was higher on Harvey Williams.
As was mentioned earlier, this isn't possible due to Harvey being much older. But Travis was close to Warrick, so it was the worst kept secret in the world that he would be a Nole. Travis was also not from Louisiana originally, so he had no real ties to LSU.

I remember saban recruited Vince Young as a DB. And wasn't there a similar issue with Tebow? Miles recruited him but didn't assure him that he'd play QB?
