Peterson didn't start returning kicks until his final (Jr) year.

Correct. As we had the fastest man in CFB (edit: Chad Jones on PR) in 2009 to take care of biz.
My point is we should be playing our best athletes at returner and should see points from the position during the year. If staff thought Giles was a top athlete on the team, then we’ve got a problem.
