I pisses me off that people still insist that Bates was never offered by LSU. This is complete and utter bullshite, not "asymmetrical information" as you so eloquently put it.

If you pay attention, you'll see very quickly that not all "offers" are unconditional. You'll hear people use the term "committable offer".

Almost immediately after Bates committed, there were pretty strong rumors that it wasn't a sure thing and that he may not have a spot. Also, there are other examples such as Storm Johnson who tried to commit without an offer.

This happens every year.

The example you use made national news because the guy wasn't even recruited and made up the entire scam to put himself in the public eye...not because he tried to accept a conditional offer. You are confused.

What are you saying then? That he is choosing USL over LSU on his own.

It's either:

-he is choosing USL over LSU which is laughable

-he never had an uncondional offer from LSU(which you claim is not true because rivals and dandy don reported him as a commitment)

-LSU pulled the offer after he accepted it(i.e. screwed him)

If only life were so simple as "three choices, pick one." Let me try to clarify for you...

I would not choose ULL over LSU. Bates may possibly choose ULL INSTEAD of LSU, but I doubt he would choose ULL OVER LSU. There are factors unrelated to football involved.

I'm not claiming he had an unconditional offer from LSU because Rivels and Dandy Don reported it. I'm saying he had an unconditional offer because Houston, his mother and step-father all told me so. There were several conversations back in June between Houston, his family and Coach Miles regarding the offer and there were no conditions attached that I'm aware of. I'm sure I would have heard, if there were. The only question was where they would use him on the field (DE, LB, RB, etc), this was the reason he was shown as an athlete, instead of at DE (or whatever).

LSU did not pull their offer. He had a LOI from LSU on NSD with his name on it. LSU had previously asked him to greyshirt, which he did not want to do and LSU accepted that. By NSD a third option was created that would satisfy both LSU and Bates - fulltime student athlete in Fall, 2010 (on his own nickel), scholarship no later than Spring, 2011.

This sort of thing should not even be discussed on this board, its not really anyones business except the coaching staff, Houston Bates and his mom and step dad.

There is way to much personal information being spouted off by people who are making assumptions about an 18 year old kid trying to make a decision that will not only impact the next four years but the rest of his life.

The bottom line is this. If he wants to come to LSU he will attend in the fall on his own dime and join the team thereafter. If he chooses to go somewhere else then it is his decision, it should be respected and good luck to him.

ItTakesAThief: You're right, but the Houston Bates story got personal months ago. I hope he goes some place where his interests, athletic AND academic, will be best served. If that ends up being LSU, I'd love it. But if he goes to SMU (or Tulane, or Colorado, or ULL), that'll work for me too.

He's a great kid and it drives me crazy to read comments that portray him as some kind of halfwit or liar. It gets tiresome reading posts that are largely conjecture or speculation. There's nothing that would make me happier that to never see his name mentioned again on TD. But until that happens, I'm going to defend him.

Mr. Roach--you aren't helping matters. Let it go--it will fade away.

I'm sure Houston has thick skin and doesn't need someone "defending" him on the intertoobs. Does he know that you've "taken up his cause", Mr. Heaton?

Sorry, just creepy to me.

I've been reading slightly different versions of the same BS for 9 months. It hasn't gone away yet.

He better have a thick hide if he reads TD. And he does know I've "taken up his cause"

You say that as if there is any other board that matters.

This thread should live on for all the future recruits/ladies men that have non-committal offers to attend LSU.
