Five-Star Plus+ EDGE Colin Simmons is a 'must-win' recruitment for Texas

Texas has made it known that they will NIL this one as much as possible to keep him in state. Expected when it comes down to it the three teams will be LSU, A&M and Texas.

On the latest edition of the On3 Roundtable, Texas recruiting insider Gerry Hamilton broke down just how important he is:
“Texas is moving to the SEC next year. And who are you battling for Colin Simmons? He’s gonna sign with an SEC program. You’re battling LSU, Georgia, Alabama, Texas A&M and Florida. This is one you have to win,” Hamilton said. “There are certain must-get recruitments, there are certain guys that programs in the state can’t afford to lose. They must win for the No. 1 EDGE prospect in the country.”

The 6-foot-2, 225-pounder has been compared to NFL star and future Hall of Famer Von Miller. He ultimately chose Texas A&M back in 2007 over Texas and a number of others, but the Longhorns are very much in the race for Simmons along with the aforementioned schools. He has yet to announce where he will take official visits, but has been to Texas, LSU and TCU more than any other schools. Each of those three are likely to get OVs.
“Going on campus to those schools, I just want to see if I can stay there for the next three-to-four years, see if I’ll actually have fun and enjoy myself out there rather than not feel the school,” Simmons told On3’s Chad Simmons in March. “I want to feel comfortable.
… Just whoever I feel comfortable with, whoever I feel like I can trust, whoever I feel like is going to have my best interest, who’s gonna take care of me and protect me for the next three-to-four years,” he added about what he looks for in a school. “I’m keeping a close eye on the coaching staff. Everybody tells you the same thing, so I want to see with my own eyes.”

Trust LSU to close the deal with Simmons and some teammates. Texas can’t throw production and wins like they do the bag. Coach on the hot seat with a lackluster season after the initial hype. Kelly and company will march into Texas and grab their next great defender. Simmons and McKinley would be a monster haul, that I anticipate will get done but as we know Crown, we’ll wait and see.

I hate to be a debbie downer but this just feels like one of those recruits that speaks highly of LSU throughout the whole process but ends up elsewhere.

I'm with you. You never know in recruiting but I like where we're at.

Texas will never let him leave, if I was LSU I would already look for someone else. Hate to be that guy and I’ll

He is the backup plan?
They need to get both. Jackson is a nice player.
Like I've been saying, they need to finish very strong.

They let Harold Perkins get out…

Texas isn’t even a powerhouse anymore. You don’t go there for long term development as a highly touted recruit. LSU, Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, etc, sure. Texas can offer a bag and then some but if a recruit wants the development and a winning program, they’ll leave to greener pastures outside the state of Texas.

He will stay in Texas…..bet on it!

A safer bet is you coming to this board repeatedly and showing how much of a dumbass you are

The bag he gets in college is chump change compared to being prepared for the next level as a man and player, and that's why LSU has as good a shot, or better than Texas.

Totally agree, how many players has Texas put in the NFL the last 10 years vs LSU? And how have they done since they got there?

We can see, and hope, long term, but this is immediate big money for kids who have none and have to know it isn't a guarantee they'll make it to the NFL. That NOW money is more appealing than you give it credit for.

That’s the problem with both programs, in the most talent rich state. The arrogance due to money, past success, or both, often cloud their judgement. Texas will continue to underachieve and A&M will try to cling onto relevancy by offering absurd money to no avail. Simmons seems smart enough to see that and I’ll take a gamble on LSU to getting him and developing him to a top tier draft prospect. He’ll get a bag AND top tier development. We shall see

Exactly, its not an either/or prospect. At LSU, he will get a competitive NIL deal, while also being molded for the next level. Texas can surely offer more money up front, but as has been seen in recruiting in the NIL landscape, it's about more than just the money for a program and prospect.
You have to be able to offer the total package, and I think LSU can do that with a higher degree of success than Texas can, and I doubt this fact is lost on young Mr. Simmons. I don't think his infatuation with LSU is just for show.

Completely agreed. Not only that, but take a glance at his teammates as well. They’re strongly considering LSU as a unit. It’s quite telling.
