Just want to note an interesting tidbit re: Ole Miss because I haven't seen it mentioned on here, amidst all the concern that we can't keep up in the portal.

In particular: Ole Miss is currently in the process of going "all in" on this portal class. More specifically, they are going all in on making the 2024 playoff. The reporting (Bud elliot, via cover 3 podcast) is that they saw their conference schedule for the upcoming season, realized they were unlikely to ever see a much easier path, and made the call to break open their piggybank and spend everything they had to make a run in 2024. Note that this was stated by an unbiased third-party and was stated before ole miss had gotten this wave of portal commits (they had either 0 or 1 at the time) and predictions, so it's not just a post-hoc rationalization to excuse the fact that we're "losing" to them in the portal.

Would it have been great if we could've landed that portal CB whos headed to ole miss? Definitely. Is it frustrating that Ole Miss is going to wind up with a better portal class than us? Of course. Am I worried about the overall, long-term status of our NIL and recruiting situation relative to theirs? Absolutely not. Ole Miss (a) has only the #20 HS class at the moment, and (b) is truly emptying the clip to maximize a single season. BK has been incredibly up front about his intention to build for the long-term, by placing the primary focus on HS recruiting and by taking a responsible approach to disbursing our NIL funds - and rightfully so. You know what teams you don't see at the top of the transfer portal rankings every year? UGA, Michigan, Alabama. Because the best teams are built through HS recruiting and a long-term focus.

Bottom line: Chill out - we're FINE. Would you rather have a better group of one-year rentals for 2024 or make a legitimate run at the #1 overall HS class for the 2024 cycle?

You lost me at Bud Elliot. And isn’t he close with an Ole Miss guy? The Dentist or whatever he calls him.

They've dominated the defensive side of the ball in the portal. That's pretty much a fact. Pretty unreal. And added Juice Wells from South Carolina that is a legit offensive weapon that will play on Sundays.

They will be a top 5 team next year I think.

We will be fine too. But we can be a little jealous of their defensive adds from the portal.

ETA:

Defensive players added:

Walter Nolan - DT
Princely Umanmielen - EDGE
Tyler Baron - EDGE
Chris Paul Jr - LB
Decamerion Richardson - CB
Key Lawrence - S

All 6 of those guys are instant starters and impact players and at every level of the defense.

And they have several other decent defensive adds. Their defensive talent is going to be exponentially higher next season.

That number #20 class of Ole Miss is not just HS recruits there a several JUCOs (at least 4) in that class.

Then it will be that much more satisfying when we pistol whip them in Tiger stadium and repay them for throwing shite at our players.

?? Bud is sharper and more plugged in that damn near any other CFB commentator.

In any event, I dont even understand your point. Are you saying he's wrong about this? Like, what...? Is your argument that Ole Miss actually isn't making a huge portal push?

lmfao jesus christ. "The dentist" is a former HS teammate of Barton Simmons (current general manager for Vandy football) who Barton mentioned on the podcast and subsequently became a running bit. He's just a random dude that gives picks for ole miss games when they do picks episodes.

In any event, if you're trying to say that Bud is biased in favor of Ole Miss (he's not; he's an FSU fan), then his comments on this make zero sense. None of the comments i reiterated are pro-ole miss in any way; rather, they suggest that what we're currently seeing from ole miss isn't sustainable

Just maybe use your brain the slightest bit next time.

Well, the Rebels have the #1 portal class in the country right now. If Kiffin can have a huge year with this class, it will also make the program more attractive for high school recruits.

I have no idea how much they're spending on this class, but whatever it is, they ain't running out of money. Dickie Scruggs, David Nutt, and James & Thomas Duff are all Ole Miss supporters, and each one of them can buy Gordon with their pocket change.

Ole Miss is starved for some kind of championship, regardless of what it costs. Let's just hope Lane screws it up or leaves for another job.

We had only a few spots available for the portal. This board was creating unrealistic expectations of quantity over quality.

Kiffin is on the hot year and if he fails to beat Saban next year he’s on the hot seat and knows it

He just led Ole Miss to 10 regular season wins, a top 10 regular season finish, beat the hated LSU, and a NY6 bowl. They might elect him mayor. This was the best season in recent history besides Freeze's Sugar Bowl year and they still brag about that shite.

Several of my best friends are Ole Miss grads and they are over the moon over the status of the program.

I'm not freaking out about Ole Miss, period. We beat them in Death Valley next year. But I am jealous of their defensive portal haul.

ETA:

Sorry they finished #11.

Wouldn’t make a difference if they had all 5 star players across their defense. No team coached by Kiffin has ever been good defensively and that ain’t changing with new recruits

They will be a lot better on that side of the ball, but I agree under Kiffin they won't be dominant.

Why is that funny? I didn't say their defense would be dominant. Are you really rolling on the floor laughing your arse off at the assertion they've dominated portal recruiting on the defensive side of the ball? Seems aggressive.

Considering that the only way Kiffin can lose to Saban next year is in the SEC Championship game, I don't think that would put Lane on the hot seat.

You definitely have a higher opinion of Bud than I do, he tried to start rumors about LSU earlier in the season. He’s nothing special he’s just another recruiting guy, I’m not even sure what his role is at 247 now.

Scruggs and Co are broke and in prison. NO NIL there.

He's been out and still extremely, extremely wealthy. He's likely worth over a billion dollars still.

ETA:

That being said, Ole Miss only associates with him in dark rooms in the middle of the night. He is radioactive. Name removed off of all the buildings and when that happened apparently he was furious after all the money he had donated.

They have slowly brought him back into charities and things, but very low key.
