I wonder if coaches started putting a weight in with their letters to make sure they didnt make it in the trash.

and we also had Ben Gay at Spring
Did he play at Spring? I though he went to Klein? But I could be mistaken...

All this information is sometimes as sad and tragic as it is informative. And as someone who watched Cecil Collins tear up a few teams from the south endzone, I am often reminded about just how meaningless football can be compared to other situations. To whom much is given, much is expected. When someone has this attitude, their chances for success after the breif glimmer of stardom fades seems much higher.
The 2001 #1, Kevin Jones, reminds me of why I am begiining to despise the Army all-star game with all that stupidity about choosing the hats and rubbing in your choice to the other teams and fans. If my kid were in the spot, he would make his choice on signing day with as little fanfare as possible. Some interesting comments were from Tim Couch about how coaches promise the stars and give you dirt after you have signed. I couln't help think about a few talented kids who wound up in jail. I am sure each and every person on this rant knows at LEAST one of two kids from the area who had beaucoup talent, squandered it, and never made it college at all. It was also interesting to read how you may have 80,000 fans calling your name, but you may have zero friends on campus. Tough for an 18 or 19 year old kid to endure.
If I were a coach, and I have to beleive they do this, we would have a "Big Man on Campus (BMOC) 101" class within twenty minutes after the last recruit hit the campus. Maybe we should think like this, and it goes back to an earlier time. Roman slaves were assigned to crouch in the chariot of each Conquering Proconsul as he enjoyed his Triumph. "Remember," the slave would whisper, "Remember thou art mortal!" So it were that swelled heads and rash, prideful deeds were averted, but today, that is an art now all but lost, especially when it comes to sports.
And merely a hunch, but I have to believe that Coach Miles knows and understands this. It is probably one reason why his players like him so much. It was intersting after the Cotton Bowl ended to see opposing team players come up to him and shake hands with him. That doesn't seem like a "Tim Couch experience" kind of recruiter.

Well......
Joe McKnight sounds like an absolute moron.
and
Matt Barkley, unsurprisingly, sounds like a snotty, conceited, douche who thinks that his actions somehow profoundly affect everyone else around him.

College: Florida State
NFL Draft: No. 207 pick (Tennessee Titans) in 2010
Now: Titans practice squad member
They really sell Rolle short in this. He's a rhodes scholar after all. I feel like that should be in his now section.
Mcknight was the funniest by far imo.

The thing that made me laugh even harder about this is when one of the NFL scouts questioned him during the pre-draft stuff, "Do you feel like you let your teammates down when you went away for your Rhodes scholarship?"

I'm pretty sure Manning was the #1 recruit in just about every magazine.

Depend on which magazine you read.
According to the magazine I read, Josh Booty was the National Offensive Player of the year so P. Manning wasn't even the #1 player in the state of LA.
Oh, the magazine I read was USA Today, BTW.

Not as many #1's from Texas as I expected. I imagine that is due to the level of competition.
