Too many great backs to give that title to one player

Jim Brown
Walter Payton
Barry Sanders
Emmitt Smith
Eric Dickerson
Tomlinson
Thurman Thomas
Adrian Peterson
Tony Dorsett
Gayle Sayers
Earl Campbell
Marshall Faulk

Missing many other great backs and any of the above could have carried a team to championships

I purposely left one player off this list for murdering his ex wife and led the police on a slow chase on live prime time TV and stared in the famous TV trial

Yea, I remember when we played Florida. We would hit Smith in the backfield and he would still gain 2-3 yards from scrimmage.

What made Emmitt the best ever is he showed up big in the big games. Sanders always disappeared in big games. Not a Dallas fan but Emmitt was the best ever, period.

He also came out of the game on 3rd downs and in the red zone quite often, because he was not a complete back like Emmitt and Payton. He was however, the best open field runner in NFL history.

Little different supporting cast. You could focus on Sanders think Fournette against Bama.Detroit didn’t Have Aikman,or Michael Irving.Give me Sanders all day everyday. Not close.Have them switch teams.and we wouldn’t be having this discussion.

All things equal (playing with the same O line and QB and against the same defense) if it’s 3rd and 2—I am giving it to Emmitt over Barry. Emmitt is getting that two no matter what. Barry, as great as he was, had the propensity to lose 1-3 trying to make a big play.

ignorant take. No, Smith was not the greatest of his generation. Barry Sanders was far better. Emmitt might not be top 10 all time. Dallas OL was as good as any ol in history of NFL.

Good thing we're not recruiting Emmitt since his eligibility has expired or we might get off topic.

Say what? You do realize the shite teams that Sanders played on right? Forget that short lived run they made in the early 90's. If he wouldn't have hung it up early in his career he would have smashed the rushing record and would still hold it today.

Even though he did play 9 years which in itself is a long time even today for a RB to play in the league. He was a very healthy and a young RB still, if that makes sense.

Man, I have forgot about his son, Barry Sanders, Jr. What in the hell happened to him? Too much hype and not really that good? I guess you can throw in James Wilder, Jr as well. Those two off the top of my head came in with so much hype.

Wow I've seen some stupid sh*t on this board but now this. So because Emmitt wasn't the "greatest back of all time"(in your opinion) you hope his son is better because Emmett wasn't good enough? If his son is half as good as his dad we ought to offer. That would mean he'd nearly have 2000 yds rushing in 3 yrs at LSU and over 9000 yds in the NFL. That's half of what Emmitt did. You're certifiably Nuts

I can see why, the vast majority of these comments are about his dad.

No he didn't. He carried the ball 20+ times a game. Just like Emmitt and Payton. He took a few less years than both of them to get to his final number of yards and retired with a good bit of tread left on the tire out of respect for a dying Payton. The only difference in Sanders and Smith is Smith played for Pro-bowl lineman and on championship teams. Anyone that is old enough to remember both of those guys careers from start to finish would consider Sanders the better back period.

Right.

Emmitt Smith is now horribly underrated because he played behind a great OL in Dallas. You don't become the all-time leading rusher by being just OK. He was a great player, period.

Lomas Brown, Kevin Glover and one Pro Bowler Sanders ran behind say hello. Did you not watch the 1991 divisional game between Dallas and Detroit? The score was something like 38-3 Detroit, so yeah they were very talented and a championship caliber team, but thise facts don't fit the narrative. I would take Emmitt and Payton over Sanders in a playoff game anyway, because they were leaders, winners and had heart. Sanders was just a highlight film...not a winner.

The Lions were never championship caliber and they never had an O-line even close to what the Cowboys had for most of Smith's career. I hate the Cowboys and hated Smith, but he was a bad MF. The first guy never got him down and he never went backwards when tackled. Just because we favor 1 over the other doesn't mean the other guy sucked. Sanders was far more explosive and exciting. Both were extremely durable. I remember saying this when they were both playing, if Barry had been playing for the Cowboys then he would've had 2000 yards damn near every season, so I'd go with him over Emmitt. However, both are probably top 5 all time.

Anyway, this post was about Emmitt JUNIOR

Sanders was amazing with his balance and ability to change direction, but he also had more negative running plays than any RB in NFL history. His style of bouncing from lane to lane to get the big play led to a lot of drive killing plays as well. Emmitt was a great downhill runner with balance, power and vision.

Best RBs ever? I'd have to say Brown and Payton.
