I see Alabama tends to go after the bigger SDE the 285 guys where as we tend to go after people classified at DT to fill out DE spots.

We haven’t recruiting a “SDE” in a while.

It’s seems like an arbitrary classification but any reasoning?

LSU needs Big guys that can move and are athletic .Seems lately we have been missing on these types and setting for projects especially at the DT position. You need these guys to compete with the big dogs. Unfortunetly we havent got any stud Dt's since lawerence like 3 years ago and this years class seems to be another miss.

Your premise might be true of the 2018 season but it doesn't hold weight over the last decade.

For example:

Dshawn Hand was a DT.

Ashawn Robinson was an OT that they converted.

Marcel Darius was also a DT.

So was Jonathan Allen.

There is no strategy behind it. In a 3-4 a DT and a SDE are going to pretty much play the same DE position and then you try to get a big monster to play NT.

Bama takes the best athletes/players that they can find and then they mold and develop them to fit the roles that they want them to play.

Frankly, we've been slacking at recruiting on the Dline in the past 5 years. Not a shot at anyone- just the truth of the situation.

We've missed on guys like: Marvin Wilson, Phidarian Mathis, Isiah Buggs, Kendall Jones and Raekwon Davis in our area.

We have no inroads to Florida. Our Dline coach is from MS and it looks like were gonna miss on our 4 dline targets from MS this year.

Calling a kid a SDE or DT in HS doesn't really matter especially when you're not landing any of them.

No need to pay attention to SDE or DT, it's just the size in the end.

And yes, we seemingly go after larger guys to play DE than Bama, NT as well.

It's kind of like we are Bama from 5-8 years ago, where as they have shifted to smaller more athletic guys on their front.

And I prefer the way the are building their D-line now. Much more depth is needed behind our guys because of how big and out of shape they are. We try to bulk them up too much rather than getting them in the best shape athletically and letting them play at that weight. Fehoko and Lawrence would both be beasts in the 285-290 weight range, but we bulked both up to about 310-315.

Aranda likes to use his DL to control the OL and eat blocks which allows the linebackers to run free and make plays. I don’t imagine a bunch of elite DL want to play in that scheme.

I just want to know how he was so much more successful at Wisconsin with this scheme than he is here. Were they that much stronger on the D-line than us? They were always unbelievable against the run because they always had lb running free.

Yeah that's the problem.
It's aranda s core principles.
The linebackers are the ones who are going to make the plays .

It sort of sucks for recruiting

After watching the defense this year, I think this might be a misconception. Only rushing 3-4 guys, I think he's absolutely counting on the defensive linemen to be able to get pressure, shed blocks and make plays.

It was a question about D-line strengths. Your reply did not help answer it. I feel like it is a valid question considering the success he had at Wisconsin.

Allen was actually a LB/WDE in high school. Bama turned him into a DE because his body handled so much bulk well. I watched the kid play in hs and youd have never thought hed be a DT sized kid.
The poster below got it correct with Bama. They recruit the best players to fit their system and mokd them into whatever role they grow into.

6 4 300 is not small. But they have shifted away from the 350 NT. Possibly because there are not that many out there.

We have to change our training methods to agility and quickness with a little bit less emphasis on strength.

There are ways to do,that. Box jumps. Dot drills. Star drills.burpees. Speed ladders. Multidirectional jumps over short hurdles. You can significantly increase explosion quickness and lateral movement. I am sure they know a lot more than me about the fast twitch stuff.
