Derek Dooley mad over LSU recruiting

Memphis Commercial Appeal
Damn he's talking about Les the way people talked about The Bear before recruiting restrictions. Makes it sound like Les is driving around in a truck stacking cord wood or something and LSU has pro bowl talent nose guards running second team fullback. Maybe Les could sell air conditioning to Eskimos.
Geaux Les!
The writer of that column is LSU grad, Ron Higgins. The header and the beginning of the column are about in-state recruiting. The first part of it makes it sound like Higgins is taking a shot at Les.
Dooley's Copeland story is dealing with a coach from Tennessee and a coach from Louisiana recruiting a kid from Georgia. Almost makes me think Dooley was setting Higgins straight.
Maybe he just should have said Dooley was mad!

Tennessee second-year coach Derek Dooley, a one-time LSU assistant under Nick Saban before becoming head coach at Louisiana Tech, said the amount of talent stockpiled by the No. 1-ranked Tigers is astounding.
His example is LSU sophomore fullback J.C. Copeland. As a high school senior when he had 27 sacks (that's not a typo) for LaGrange (Ga.) Troup County, Copeland, now 6-1, 275, was rated the nation's 17th best defensive end.
"We were begging to get him (Copeland) when I got here," Dooley said. "We were begging to have him at nose guard and we lost him to LSU where's he's really rolling as a second-team fullback. That's what they (LSU) are.

Besides Arkansas, LSU is the only school in the SEC that doesn't have another BCS in-state school to battle in recruiting. And because the amount of high school talent that translates to Louisiana having more players in the NFL per capita than any state in the nation, there's no reason LSU shouldn't annually challenge for SEC and national championships unless the coach is a nitwit.

He didn't seem mad to me.

Just sounded really frustrated that someone he probably thinks would be starting on his defense is a back up fullback at LSU.
Maybe I think mad because Dooley said Copeland was "really rolling as a second-team fullback".
Really just wanted to share the Copeland story with everyone because it makes me proud to think the kid is happy to be on this LSU team. I am glad Les wanted him and I'm glad he is contributing to the team with some great blocking. He is one of many examples of this coaching staff seeing athletes and knowing they can contribute somewhere.

Yeah - it seemed more like praise to me, that players who would be first team in a far more coveted position are fine with taking a , relatively low fame/exposure, position and that too with the second team.

The Copeland/Worle situation was kinda messed up IMO.

I don't know why people still complain about Copeland moving to FB
I used to be one of those people but after seeing Copeland in person, I don't know if he was ever tall enough to play as an SEC DT
I'm an even 6'0 tall and Copeland is at least 2 inches shorter than me

Dooley stole Justin Hunter from us so he could quit bitching. Even though TN doesn't produce as much talent as LA, they still own the football players in that state. Vandy only competes with the Vols for basketball players.

That's 3 inches shorter than his listed height of 6'1" so it seems like a stretch. But I do agree that he is severely undersized to be starting DT for any SEC team including the Vols. Quinn Johnson made a successful transition from a defender to playing fullback and got drafted in the 3rd round. I believe he took over the starting FB job from John Kuhn for the Packers.

Plays for the Titans now
but anyways trust me man, JC is 5'10 or 5'11 at most and I believe he will be a top 5 FB in the nation his senior year, definitely going to be drafted which is pretty rare now-a-days for a FB

I'm sure he's dropped at least 2 inches since he started playing FB...

Copeland (a DT prospect) and Worle (a FB prospect) were buddies that came to LSU together. LSU converted Copeland to FB and Worle quit.

Most of the athletic talent in Tenn comes from Memphis, which is not Vol country at all. Even when they were rolling with Fulmer, they were going out of state for players. There is a reason the Vols have a recruiting budget over $1million.

Thanks for posting this article.
What I got out of it is a huge compliment to the current LSU program, an expression of respect, maybe somewhat envious, maybe disappointment in losing out on Copeland, but I don't see mad.
I hope Dooley is given a fair chance to succeed at UT.

the article is another way of saying what Dooley said the day he took the job.
Tennessee has to recruit a 300 mile circle from Knoxville, that includes ATL, Louisville, Cincinnati.
Why, you might ask? Because if you look at the rivals list of players from Tennessee, its not half of what Louisiana has. Therefore, UTk must recruit the big cities OUT OF STATE.
Doomed. National recruiting is what made Tennessee great when they had Fullmer. Dooley is just hoping for REGIONAL recruiting, and ATL is already picked over by G Tech, Ga, Florida South Carolina and Clem. Louisville is recruited by the Big Ten, Louisville, Notre Dame and UK. Cincinnati is recruited by Big Ten, especially THE Ohio State U and Notre Dame.
Dooley is in deep trouble and he knows it. he is just reminding his fan base that LSU has an advantage so after the whipping, people will not use the words HOT SEAT. Notice he got in a dig at Miles, too. Low blow. I hope LSU shuts them down.
Dooley is not mad. he is green with jealousy. Maybe he wishes he was back at La Tech.

There was more to it than just that... Worle had some lingering injuries that prevented his progression.
Speaking of Worle, where is he at now?

Copeland is TEENY for nose guard. He made the right decision.
quote:footballbabble.com
A nose tackle is employed more often in 3-4 defensive schemes than in 4-3 defensive schemes, which tend to line their two defensive tackles in the gaps between the center and guards, or directly over the guards.
In the 3-4 defense, the nose tackle is meant to take on the center and force a double-team, hopefully freeing up a linebacker to make the tackle. In this way, the nose tackle becomes a kind of blocker for the defense’s linebackers.
Because of this, the nose tackle is usually the largest player on the defense, and often the largest player on the field. The nose tackle is supposed to be strong enough and durable enough to routinely take on two blockers without being pushed off the line of scrimmage. Therefore, strength, size and leverage (many are shorter than the average defensive end) are a premium with the nose guard.
