Rivals article says to look for this guy to flip from Baylor to LSU.

6' 3" 200 pound linebacker, Rivals has him at #19 ILB in the nation. Anyone have more intel on this guy?

I guess they decided no on Bax? Good frame though and flipping him from Aranda means that he's probably intelligent.

Bax seems intent on TCU and is probably a better fit there in that 3-3-5 they run

Billy Embody put a pick in for him early this morning. Would be a nice pickup.

Just looked and his add would keep us at 7 in the 247 composite. We are literally so close to jumping to #2

Low profile recruit with a strange mix of offers an no visits. I trust the Autist's and Matt House's evaluations over hack pundits. It's weird because he plays for Cy Ranch which is 6A in Houston so you would think he would at least have a picture

He looks 6-3. Maybe a little more than 200, but not much.

His HUDL makes him look so much like Damone Clark it's scary. Good and bad.

He's got elite short-dash speed. When he accelerates in pursuit or on a blitz he gets there in a flash. At times he'll look indecisive or like he's not giving full effort, which was a criticism of Clark particularly early in his career.

He seems like a sure tackler, though a lot of times it's arm-tackling. I'd have to watch a whole game rather than just highlights to see if his tackles are getting broken.

He's also not incredible getting off blocks, which I'm guessing our coaches think they can coach (and improve with some S&C work). But on the good side, he does seem like he understands gap responsibility and when he's in his gap it looks like he'll come forward in it rather than waiting for the back to come to him.

Clark drove us nuts for most of his career because it was clear the talent was there but the light flickered on and off, and then 3-4 games into his senior year he turned into a madman. This kid seems like he'd be similar to that. Probably wouldn't help right away except maybe on special teams, but put 30 pounds on him and let House coach him up and he's a pro prospect.

I'm good with him as a pickup if he wants to come. But I still think we need to find somebody who can displace Greg Penn next year. Probably that's a portal pickup rather than a recruit.

Clark was very good in a backup role in 2019. His poor play in 2020 and half of 2021 had NOTHING to do with his light "flickering off and on." It had EVERYTHING to do with his moron head coach deciding now that Aranda was gone he was going to run his fan-fiction amalgamation of the late 80's Miami/early '00's USC defense. A defensive approach he didn't understand how to coach, or how it would translate to 2020 offensive football. THAT singular decision was the reason LSU went from a roughly two decades of solid defense to one of the worst in the nation in the span of a year.

Clark's light didn't suddenly click "on" in the last half of 2021. It's that Orgeron finally abandoned his complete dogshit defensive approach after the Ole Miss blowout. And even then, only on the advice of Lane Kiffin. Clark always had talent. Unfortunately, he had to spend the bulk of his career trying to have success in a defensive approach NO player could have success in.

The moment Orgeron decided to dictate the on-field approach for LSU is the EXACT moment the program went to shite.

Ehhhhhh, no.

Clark found himself out of position A LOT in 2019. When he was on, he was very good. But he was in a backup role because he wasn't all that efficient.

You are correct that the defensive schemes in 2020 and 2021 didn't do him any favors.

Demario Tolan maybe, I imagine the starting two will be Harold Perkins and one of either Weeks, Tolan, a transfer or it'll be Penn. He may still be adjusting to it all.

Seems like they want Tolan to grab that spot as Weeks is really slow in pass coverage. He is pretty good against the run though

Tolan is a future 3 down backer. Slowed by injury early this year. Good to see him out there vs Ole Miss.

I've been thinking that all season, but increasingly it's hard to take Perkins out of the Jack spot. He's already so freaking good there.

Yes, if you coach him up he's an inside linebacker like Devin White, but hell - he's already essentially a Rickey Jackson on the outside.

And with Ojulari going pro, do you move Perkins inside and open up that job for Desmond Little?

I don't dislike Little, actually. I think he might be pretty good if he got a chance. But he's not Perkins.

I guess it probably just depends. If you can find a guy in the portal who's a killer edge rusher, or if Womack or Howard or the other guy are good enough to come in and immediately be a killer, then I guess you push Perkins back to an inside linebacker role. If not, you leave him where he is and you've got a disruptor on the edge and a hole at LB when Baskerville leaves and you need somebody who can come in and fill it.

That's the question, right? Would you rather have an All-American edge rusher, or an All-American inside linebacker?

I can understand if the coaches evaluated his available senior film, decided they didn't think he projects to LSU/SEC level, and declined to push for him. But I don't understand why he would be a fit in TCU's 3-3-5 but not a fit for us.

The 3-3-5 is designed to counter the spread and compensate for fewer available traditional-sized DL by offering scheme flexibility to mix/disguise things and to create confusion for the QB and the OL. Speed is paramount for an LB in a 3-3-5, as is versatility. They are asked to be stout against the run but be able to blitz and cover, too. Seems to me if Bax fits a 3-3-5 in a Power 5 conference, he would fit our D, too.

If Aranda wants a LB, I'll certainly take his endorsement.
