Before everyone blows their wad over missing on the DTs

Let me say this.
People will melt over missing on these DTs but I promise you shouldn’t.
Captain had a great post about there being no real insiders anymore, and he is 100% right. As with every post on this board, take what I say with a grain of salt.
I know the NIL package Williams got from OU. It is ludicrous. There was a number circulating on a thread a few days ago about it, and it wasn't quite that high, but it was damn close. I promise you, if LSU matched (he liked LSU much better), then we would have had to give existing star players more. It just wasn’t worth it, so we pulled out.
I'm not so privy to the Barrow situation with Miami. But I know in the winter portal they were seriously overpaying to get players. I can almost guarantee you that's what happened here.
I know a lot of you won't care and wish we would just pay the price for these guys. Thats ok and I get where you all are coming from. But some of the bags these "decent" portal guys get would make you gag.
This ain't no troll either; check my post history.
Still be excited for next season, we have a really talented group.

Soo what if we don’t get any DT’s? You’re saying we are okay?
Posted on 5/3/24 at 10:51 am to DUKE87
No, we are definitely not okay there. It is still a huge problem.
But the guys we missed out on were not good enough players to command, paying them high 6 and 7 figures.

Supposedly Texas offered Williams $1.5 million and he turned them down.
I'm OK with LSU not coming anywhere near that. He's a good player, but not great.

Now think about the deal he took with OU...
Mind you, nobody was really expecting this guy to be an All-SEC, much less All-American

I'm saying never overpay because you sure AF aren't getting the money back and it will definitely cause dissension on the team

If we do not get two decent DL before the year starts this will be a mediocre year again. A high-powered offense and a less than average defense again. The RB room will be a concern also. If Holly does not get cleared and we have one injury, we are down to two RB's. This is also a concern. Top priority is DL, then the RB room could be a major concern also.

The fact that this NIL deal for Williams got too rich for Texas of all teams should tell you all you need to know.

But we don’t, and it’s a big problem. If we just had average talent at that position we’d probably be ok. But being so weak at this position is inexcusable.

Let's call it what it is, he wanted QB money.

I meant the overall team. Not the DLine room. We are definitely in trouble there.

Money talks, bullshite walks.

That didn't happen. The handler wanted a 7 figure number and Texas didn't go that high.
From what I've heard, Williams actually wanted LSU, but the LSU offer came in at less than half of the final number.

people getting mad at BK for not giving in to these demands are foolish. he is going to build through the HS ranks, now that he has the D side shored up. and he'll use the portal for marquee guys when needed.
i'm he has a $$ per position charted, not going to break the bank for a DT when like you said, he's then have to ante up to the rest of those guys. its not perfect, but once hes had 3-4 FULL recruiting cycles and this new D staff settled in, i think he approach will keep LSU in the discussions.

LSU is just using the money towards recruiting. I think BK has the right idea you have to build through HS recruiting to win consistently. The portal will not get you NCs. It's to compliment what you have. It's short term at best and it doesn't fill gaps in depth either. You're always 1 injury away from disaster if you solely rely on portal.
You can make an argument nobody waits around anymore so HS isn't as relevant but I think that's a shortsighted way to look at it. You need a mix of both. There's a balance there. LSU was really good at it before this season. I think BK got gun shy after the awful portal showing from last year.
LSU has money but it's what BK wants. You nailed it right here. They don't want divas in the locker room with mediocre players coming in getting twice as much as stars like Perkins. Instant divide.
I will add just my personal opinion on this with nothing to base it on but speculation, but I don't think BK likes where NIL is going. I don't think he expected it to be this bad. With that in mind, he's probably not going to last as long as many think. I believe he'll hit retirement sooner than later. If he sniffs a NC here I don't think he's going to continue coaching beyond it.

I don’t think anyone is questioning if these guys deserve that much money - because I think most of us believe they don't.
But the fact is, no matter how “mid” they are, they’re still better than what’s currently on our roster.

Yeah I think BK will have a few good playoff teams in the next couple years with Bryce Underwood at the helm, but I don’t think it will be enough to get us to the title game or win it. He will retire sooner than we expect and put the program on stable footing and set it up for the next coach to succeed.

You can build through HS and have the #1 recruting class every year, but other schools will come poach the best with heavy bags. It’s become a no-win for coaches. Signed, Little Nicki.

Difference here is you have them on campus and can immediately identify who sets your program the next 3-4 years. If they like a player enough they're not going to just come poach them off LSU's roster. Perkins has been tampered with every year. With the exception of when Orgeron got fired and Heard, I'd say LSU has done a good job preventing other teams poaching their talent off the roster.
They know who to let go and who's worth spending to keep. When you have those HS players in practice it's less difficult to identify who's going to be a star or not. So, it's still relevant to program stability.
