Not a big deal, unusual situation

you are correct. His brother Garin completely dicked over Manieri. Told him he was coming to LSU unless he got over like 750k or something. THe kid signed for about 300k. I know that's a lot of money but it's less than half of what you were hoping for. So I can get where PM is coming from in not dealing with that shite.
I don't worry about losing him or that catcher to Ole Piss. Neither will ever set foot on campus.
This is correct. And, people will say that it's a personal decision by Mainieri because he was upset at Ceccini. But, the reality is that it's a leap of faith when you sign a player who will be highly drafted. And, there is a cost when you lose that player. So, you have to do your best to gauge the risk. If the risk is high, you move on to other prospects now where the risk may be less high.
Given that the parents have already shown that they are willing to mislead Mainieri, why in the world would anyone want Mainieri to allow LSU to be put into that situation again. He is doing the right thing in moving on to one of the many other prospects.

I would be shocked if he ever steps foot in Oxford. That being said, Mainieri handled his recruitment like a bitch.

i thought LSU and Tulane wanted nothing to do with Barbe players, because their coach overuses them at state
Posted on 11/9/11 at 3:59 pm to chalmetteowl
that is Rick Jones
PM was mad that the other Cecchini kid used LSU for leverage like most high round picks, then choose to cut off his brother, who at one point was an LSU commit

How many Natl Championships does Ole Miss baseball have?

is he mad he used LSU for leverage, or is he mad that he lied to PM about how much it would take for him to sign?

PM got mad because he signed a pro contract. It has nothing to do with the amounts of money, the assistants more than PM put a ton of pressure on Garin not to sign and to go to LSU and basically told Garin that Gavin would not have an offer if Garin went pro. When Garin signed there was basically never any contact with Garin or Gavin again.

You got your numbers right, just off by a million. Garin told coach he'd only sign if it was anywhere above 1.75 million and ended up signing for 1.3 million.

both, but i don't see how it matters. Things can change. It doesnt hut LSU either way.

That's ridiculous.
Kids like Delino DeShields sign with LSU but let PM know right out the gate what the chances really are. And Mainieri plans around that.
The problem occurs when the kid intentionally misleads Mainieri. Mainieri accepts the commitment based on the perceived risk and backs off other players because that slot is accounted for.
Mainieri has some quality contacts in MLB and has a pretty good idea of what a player will get offered. Sometimes, a player is drafted higher than expected and you lose out. That's just part of the risk.
But, sometimes a kid misleads you about what he would be willing to take...which effectively makes you overcommit to that player only to have him accept whatever the highest offer is when it comes in. That's what bothers Mainieri because he is powerless in that situation...and can't retroactively go fill that spot.
So, when the parents of a player have already shown that they are willing to lie to you in order to get the best offer possible, you simply can not rely on their word. Instead, you move on to one of the many other prospects that are willing to shoot straight with you.
In short, the Cecchini's were willing to overtly lie to Mainieri in order to get the best offer for their son. And, they would very likely do the same thing again. The end justifies the means for them.

Not a big deal at all. The way I see it, there are 2 ways it would play out with Gavin (and you can apply this to plenty of other pro prospects as well)
1) He signs elsewhere. People get pissed off that PM didn't recruit him and that other schools are building 'pipelines'. He signs MLB and nobody brings it up again because they look stupid.
2) He signs with LSU. He ends up signing MLB and everyone gets pissed off that we "wasted time" or "wasted a spot" or Paul "is going to have to scramble to throw together a class".
Either way...people will bitch

I'm not going to get into all the details but all I will tell you is that Garin C never lied or misled LSU or PM. He wanted to go to LSU as bad as anyone but the way he was treated after the draft by LSU assts was just crazy and it really became an easy decision for him to sign with Boston. I was so looking forward to see him in the purple and gold but I honestly cannot blame him for his decision.

So you are willing to call out the staff in general but aren't willing to go into details?
That's awfully big of you.
The truth is that you don't know what you are talking about.

No I'm not going into the details because he is a friend and I'm not going to air his business over a message board. With that being said I'm also not calling out the staff. I simply am trying to tell you what I had first hand knowledge of concerning that situation. I just don't like comments made that he lied or misled people when that is simply not the truth. Garin is a great kid with tremendous integrity. Believe what you want as apparently you know more about it than me or at least that's what you think. I'm done on the subject. Carry on.

I'd say you are calling out staff.

The details were already released on the situation, there was a thread on this a long time ago.
