We'd better off cycling through upperclassmen from the portal until we get the HS recruiting where it needs to be than going to JUCO route.

With the way things have changed with recruiting visibility and now the portal, the talent pool for football in JUCO is nearly non-existent compared to the past. But one thing that hasn't changed is the off-field reasons most of those guys are there.

We have to hit the transfer portal hard for DL. Hopefully A&M, Florida, etc. will be looking for a new coach and we can poach theirs.

This thread just made me think about that juco receiver from last year.

I think his name was Benson. His final two were Bama/lsu.

Has he even done anything yet?

Malik Benson. So far, 4 catches for 38 yards. In fairness, he's suffering from a defective delivery system.

You can't rely on the transfer portal in hopes to get DL. We should've hit this harder in HS recruiting. Considering how competitive the position is and needs of teams around the country, easy to see why we're struggling.

For all we know it won't be crisp in DL for the portal this year. You take the sure things before you get to this point.

While you are correct currently, I have heard some recruiting analysts suggest that there could be some talent at the JUCO level in the next couple years, as raw high school players who may have gotten 4-year scholarships in past years, were passed over for portal players and forced to go JUCO.

Not a certainty, but plausible theory.

Honestly, A&M and Florida retaining their coaches might help even more in poaching players.

Shone Washington is visiting this weekend. He transferred to JUCO from UGA.

That would be an interesting story.

There are still good to great players coming from JUCO. Jared Verse just last year for instance and that dude is damn near unblockable. There are still studs at that level just not as many. Would be nice to hit on someone like that.

Maybe use a juco example and not a fcs portal kid if you want to convince me.

Ah yeah you right, my bad yo. Thought I remembered him being juco. Still tho, we should be looking everywhere for DL help if it exist. I have no doubt this staff is doing just that. I hope we can find some help.

That makes sense really. There has to be a trickle down effect with the portal craziness. Could be that trickle down ends up with lower level D1 or fcs kids who blossom elsewhere then transfer up for the same reason. Lots of factors unknown still with the portal and how it trickles down. Definitely an interesting way to think about it and the future possibilities.

Yep. He's at East MS JC and will have 3 years. Not great stats so far, but as an in-state kid he's almost a must get at this point.

Napier is recruiting at an elite level. Florida has a top 4 class on multiple recruiting services.

Florida could go 5-7 this year and he'll be back, simply because of the amount of talent that he's bringing in.
