When I first evaluated Arik Gilbert and Kole Taylor I really felt that Taylor would fit this LSU offense better. I see him as a Jimmy Graham/Jeremy Shockley type. But I must admit, after watching more video of Gilbert this dude is a FREAK athlete. And I mean that in the most positive way possible. Taylor is very athletic and has good quickness, very good top end speed. But Gilbert is much bigger and moves like a 6'0" 200 # WR, not a 6'5" 260 # TE. I still like Taylor, but my goodness, what DB is going to be able to tackle Gilbert in the open field?
Watch this dude move against these CB's. This is unreal!!!

You were so very wrong in your initial evaluations.

Cut it out man. Arik is ten times better than Kole. Hell, Cole might not even make this class.

Freak athlete and a mismatch nightmare for an entire defense.

We’ll have one of the top 3 pass catching corps in the nation back to back years and probably for the year after.

I am probably one of the few who hope that both Gilbert and Taylor are part of the class.

Gilbert is the better prospect for sure. So I think LSU should take him if there is room for just one tight end.

I agree. I really hadn't taken a close enough look at Gilbert. I was really kinda stuck on Kole. I thought, and still do think, that he is going to be an excellent receiver in college and NFL. But, geez, that Gilbert kid is just on another level athletically.
Hey man, if I'm wrong I'm man enough to admit it. I don't have any insecurities or self esteem issues that I can't fess up and admit it.
I know LSU is bringing Gilbert in to play TE, but have you seen him playing DE? I'm not saying I'd rather him play defense, I'm just pointing out his overall athletic ability.
He was a lot younger in this video, but even at 14 or 15 years of age you can see the potential and athletic ability. Shows him playing defense around the 50 second mark.

You aren’t evaluating anything. You are a fan watching film. Let the coaches evaluate and you just be happy with their choices.

Sure am. Evaluation: LINK
It's not hard to do when you actually played the sport. You get an idea what it takes to succeed and if a player has those particular attributes.

A fan that understands what he is watching. A fan assessing a players speed, quickness, agility, vision, footwork, hip movement, leverage, technique, accuracy, arm strength and the list goes on. Basically a fan with a very good knowledge of the game, the positions and athletic attributes of players.

Why can't I evaluate and be happy with their choices? For this particular thread, as I said, I was pleased with Kole Taylor, unlike others on here, I was merely saying that Gilbert is a much better athlete and a freakish one at that.

A fan watching highlights. Not film.

Nobody here watches what recruits do when the ball isn’t thrown/run in their direction. We watch highlights.

Personally, I think one of Gilbert’s best traits is how natural he is as a receiver. His hands are as good as it gets for a tight end - regardless if he is running full speed (where he has “calm hands”), or when he is snatching a contested ball out of the air (like it was a rebound in basketball).

Being targeted consistently on 3rd down is primarily about reliably catching the ball. Having strength, size, quickness, and recognition means nothing if you drop the pass.

Gilbert has the ATH ability to be on the field for game 1 next season. Step into the spot vacated by Moss, and keep putting the pressure on DEFs to match up with our corps of WR's and a dynamic TE. Great get by the staff.

PS Expecting to see Moss make some impactful plays this Sat further reinforcing in the mind of Gilbert why LSU is the place to be.

No, and that’s not a knock against Gilbert. Taylor runs very well for someone 6-7.

I’m with you. They are both matchup nightmares for linebackers and safeties

I like the idea of Gilbert and Taylor on the field at the same time. That is a red zone matchup nightmare for opposing defenses.

I doubt it. There has to be some processing in this class. If Evans, Guillory, and another top OL want in this class you have to take them. Not to mention if Webb wants in as well. This is a historic class and there's going to be some tough calls that need to be made
