Yeah we really need a monster DL class in 2023. 6 spots should be allocated to this group between HS and portal guys.

How many LA guys do we sign next year? 10-12? Seems low.

We have only signed more than 10 Louisiana players once in the last 6 recruiting classes and that was 12 in 2018.

We signed 10 this year (2022) and in 2019. We signed 9 in 2017, 8 in 2021 and only 5 in state players in 2020.

So by the standard of the last 6 years, 10-12 would not be low.

That’s an exaggeration,I swear, why don’t people understand that this class was always gonna be different than were used to. It’s impossible to not drop a little with a coach getting fired early in the year but staying on throughout the season.

Hell, we didn’t even know who the coach was gonna be until close to early signing day.

The “Gumbo Pot” talent evaluations have spoken. Star Ratings & Crystal Balls to follow.

Maybe instead of stars you could use the
5 Shrimp rating system & instead of Crystal Balls you could use the Cast Iron Pot forecast. It would be just as valid as the rest.

I agree. 4 out of the current top 15 (Manning, Holstein, Collins, and Curtis) are pretty much already guaranteed to go out of state. Plus there are only 3 line recruits currently listed in the state, which means a large part of the class will have to be out of state players. Makes 10 seem like a stretch.

And that is before the crimson midget and the ATM machine come calling. And before you get worked up, I know this year was an anomaly with a fired coach and all, but Jacoby Mathews and Danny Lewis should serve as warning shots.
1) LSU is locked in for ALOT of dead money to a staff no longer here.
2) The contracts you are paying to Kelly + staff, Mulkey, Johnson, and the extension Will Wade is about to get.
3) The money that Wade and Johnson will want for NIL to recruit which Wade has already hinted at. Plus they are eyeing a new basketball arena.
4) Louisiana will not be able to go toe to toe financially with a state as large as Texas. Over half of the top talent in the state left this year and we still didn't have enough money to keep Mathews and Lewis. Imagine if we were trying to hold on to most of the top 10 like most years.

I am not saying LSU is doomed, but the boosters are spread thin on money right now and it will be hard to maintain success in 4+ different sports now that NIL will be costing so much. I would not be surprised if LSU struggles with NIL until Coach O is officially paid off and that money can be used elsewhere.

All of the DL are in Alabama. Sheesh!

Rivals 2023 Top 250

I counted 9. A couple of them based on size may project better to stand up in a 3-4, but I'd definitely make the plan to lock up everything in LA and then maybe steal a couple of these.

You've been down voted but you are correct. People just don't want to face reality. We are "poor" by the standards we hope to achieve when it comes to the NIL stuff. Matthews, Citizen and Lewis aren't anomalies. They are the status quo until our money people decide to play ball like the rest.
With us knowing we are behind in the NIL arms race all this "fence around the state" talk needs to be quieted because it isn't going to happen as long as the TX billionaires and Bama army have the overwhelming advantage in money they can use to bulldoze that fence to the ground. We let Miami bitch us with NIL. There's your reality check.

Good point. I think 2023 will be fine but 2024 needs difference makers.

Nah we are going to need some DEs. LSU lost Jackson to transfer, Gaye will be out of eligibility, and I'm willing to bet Ojulari balls out a declares early. Cherry will be a senior next year and there is no guarantee he uses his covid year. That gives us, for sure (taking out the possibility of transfers for this exercise), Little, Langston, Jones, and Wiggins. We need at least 2, and I think 3 is ideal. Carter is a hybrid, so I don't know where he falls.

For DTs if Fitzgerald is going to be going on offense, we have only gotten 3 DTs in the last 2 classes. With the others added, we have 6 DTs with. With us going with a hybrid offense, I could see us being fine taking one DT. The state of Alabama has a big crop of DTs and I think we should just attack all of them.

So at least 4 DL, and ideally 5 with a 2nd DT.

1 K
1-2 QBs
2 RBs
2 TE
2 LB
2 S
3 WR
3 OL
3 CB
4-5 DL

That's 23-25.

I'm not saying LSU is doomed to be mediocre, in fact I applaud what they are trying to do. What I am saying is how many other schools are legitimately top 15-25 programs in FB, MBB, WBB, T&F, and baseball like LSU is attempting to do right now? There is less than a handful. It is not easy to do in general, but it will be even "harder" (read more expensive) in the age of NIL. Every top recruit is going to expect a top NIL deal, and there is only so much money to go around. Most schools will prioritize a couple of sports. I do think LSU football will find a way to be competitive because they will choose to. But you are asking a lot out of a booster base that is paying $17+ million to make coach O and his staff go away while also paying what I would bet is one of the top collective coaching staff payrolls in the country. I don't think it is a stretch to say if they had Coach O's $5 million dollar check this year, Mathews, Citizen, and Lewis would all be tigers right now.

But the last thing I will say is this: You have your head in the sand if you are not concerned that ATM already had the greatest class in history, including 6 5-stars, bought and paid for, and yet they still had FAR more money left over to offer Jacoby than LSU did when we had our lowest ranked recruiting class we have had in years.

I think that NIL makes a huge difference. NFL players don’t stay in state. Why? Because they are paid, and they go where the money is. Well, now college players are paid. They always were, but now they are paid a lot more. I expect a lot more kids going out of state.

As long as they are being replaced with players as good or better, then it’s fine. I’d like to keep local kids here, but money talks as we saw this signing period.

Right now '23 has 17 players rated 4 star or higher. Just for comparison I looked up the last five years to see how they compared.

'22 - 16 (4* plus)
'21 - 11
'20 - 16
'19 - 16
'18 - 13

So LA has averaged 14 4* + players over the past 5 years. And keep in mind those were the final rankings. By national signing day there could be 20+ 4 star players when some of these 3 star guys get offers from bama and other big programs.

The link I provided show's 14 four or higher stars and 2 of those LSU does not have a chance, Manning and Holstein.

Also, since I posted the OP it looks like 247 updated their database. It looks like they are reporting more in state LA recruits now from the time I originally posted this thread. I wish I would have screen shot the original 247 list for LA recruits.

IMO, we still have a chance with Collins albeit he has already committed to Perdue. Holstein is committed to aTm and doesn't want the competition against Howard which I don't understand. He's likely going to get stiff competition from other aTm QBs.

I’ve never understood how people got to this conclusion about Holstein. I know he transferred to Zachary but I don’t thinks it’s because he was scared of competing with Howard I think it was so he can have 2 years to play and get noticed by colleges. If he was scared of competing he wouldn’t be committed to AM.
