It’s been well talked about how bad the 2023 class was for LSU but after looking deeper the 2023 class as a whole sucked

here’s the top 50 players in the top 4 classes for 2023 that really haven’t panned out so far (OL excluded bc hard to find snap counts and PFF grades)

#1 class Alabama (7-5 star players) (maybe worse than LSU’s)

On3 industry player rankings

#2 (edge) Keon Keeley - 2 assisted tackles in career
#18 (CB) Dezz Ricks- 2023, 2 games 0 stats transferred to A&M 2024, 18 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 int
#24 (DL) James Smith- 18 career tackles 0 sacks
#26 (edge) Yhonzae Pierre- 5 career tackles , 1 TFL
#27 (LB) Qua Russaw, 30 career tackles, 3 TFL’s, 1 sack, 2 INT’s
#38 (WR) Jalen Hale- 5 catches, 148 yards in career
#50 (S) Jahlil Hurley- 1 tackle in career

Georgia #2 class

#25 (DL) Jordan Hall- 14 tackles in career
#39 (CB) AJ Harris-2023, 8 tackles, transferred to Penn State
#44 (edge) Samuel M’Pemba- 6 career tackles
#47 (S) Joenel Aguero- (correction), 32 tackles 3 TFL’s in career still at Georgia

Texas #3 class (top players in this class have been fairly productive)

#31 (WR) Johntey Cook- 16 catches 273 yards 2 TD’s in 2 seasons

Ohio State #4 class

#35 (WR) Brandon Inniss- 13 catches 209 yards 2 TD’s
#48 (CB) Jermaine Mathews- 28 tackles 3 TFL’s 1 INT

Not listing LSU’s bc we all know how bad it was but apparently wasn’t the only 2023 class to stink it up so far

Would be nice if there was rule that you have spend at least 2 years with the school you commit to out of high school or the portal.

Solid thread. Information like this is exactly why I laugh every time somebody melts for anything LSU related. Most of our fans only watch LSU in a vacuum and have no idea what’s going on outside of LSU’s program.

This sentiment is even worse for baseball. Tenfold

This is why portal recruiting is just as important, if not more valuable than HS recruiting.

It'll be interesting to see how this affects HS recruiting in the long term. Unless something changes, it'll be hard to get "developmental type" HS recruits and keep them on your roster.

How much of an impact did the extra Covid year have on this class? Was this a case of 2020-2022 classes getting an extra year and staying ahead of 2023 on the depth chart?

So what does this say about the overall process and the evaluators?

Well 3 of those teams are in the playoffs and Bama would be in if Clemson didnt beat SMU. Those teams have more/better depth than LSU. So obviously most of those 2023 guys will be sitting behind more experienced talent and are in position to play in bigger roles in 2025.

Three of those teams have better player development, coaching continuity, and roster continuity (Verdict is still out on Bama's new staff).

Useless comparison.

I'd love to know the percentage of signing classes that actually end up doing anything of significance.

I think the historical stats about five stars always outperforming are about to be turned upside down. The early pay day will kill their motivation, and you'll see 4-star and 3-star players who are late developers start to be highly valued. I'm not saying all will bust, but you will start to see fewer reach potential.

Bama still has 6 of the 7?
Ga and TX retained theirs?

Whether they have produced or not isn’t the point to me. It tells me that none of them have been processed and, therefore, the staff still wants them. Probably means that they are behind upper classmen and they don’t mind sitting for now. That provides depth which a lot of teams wish they had.
Obviously, none of them are Dallas Turner and they might turn out to be busts. But, just because they haven’t started in their redshirt years doesn’t make them busts by any stretch of the imagination

None of those four teams had a coach run the program into the ground and the have to damn near start from scratch.
LSU did!

And yet donors are still stupid enough to hand these kids millions upon millions to play for their favorite team. I’d say they’ll learn one day but I really doubt they will.
