We need to start racking up Top 100/200 type prospects like Vandy does. Yeah you'll lose a good bit to the draft but Vandy just brought in 6 Top 100 prospects which is crazy. Just gotta roll the dice to compete with stuff like that.
Agree 100%.

Are we able to offer full paid tuition like Vandy does?

LSU has TOPS which instate kids should all qualify for honestly. It's not hard at all.

But where are most of these elite players coming from? LSU is getting the Louisiana kids. It's the Bregman from New Mexico and Lange from Illinois recruits that put you over the top to compete for the CWS title.

Well when you can get the Louisiana kids without using your scholarships, you can use a higher percentage on out of state Elite players

TOPS isn't close to the scholarships Vandy is offering - both in dollars and % of the total cost. LSU is employing the strategy you describe, but I think to LSUs detriment (Kale Breaux is the most recent example).

I was listening to a FanGraphs podcast the other day and they mentioned Riley Pint as a potential 1/1. I don't expect him to make it to campus.

Blair Frederick is a project. Honestly was a little surprised when i saw he signed with LSU. I don't think he's even the best pitcher on Brother Martin's team (that would be the big guy Keagan Gillis. Kid is like 6'10). I've seen him a pitch a few times. His mechanics are shotty but he does have a very live arm. He's a project in my opinion. Probably a career mid-reliever if he sees the mound at all.

Well, it seems pretty obvious to me that we need to cheat

If it's a full scholarship, how is it not close in %? Plus there are levels of TOPS, so you can get X amount of money on top of the full scholarship. Not trying to be a dick, just asking for clarification.

Note on Pint's outing in this week's Area Code Games...
quote:

Friday started off about as strongly as it possibly could, with righthander Riley Pint (Lenaxa, Kan.) taking the mound in the top of the first inning of the 8:00 a.m. game. Pint threw like he had something to prove, hitting 98 mph with his first two pitches and pitching in the 94-97 mph range for three near perfect innings. His 81-83 mph curveball showed good depth and power although it wasn't really a dominant pitch and he threw one 86 mph changeup.

The most notable thing about Pint's performance, aside from lightning fast and liquid arm action, was that he seemed in control the entire time. He threw strikes with the exception of one first inning walk, generally pitched to contact and even made an outstanding defensive play on a ball in front of the plate to show his athleticism. In the big picture, of course, it's hard to ignore the 98's to start off the game and the 96's to finish it off but it was an overall performance that had the scouts buzzing the rest of the day.

Thanks for the info MOT. Would be a huge get with 3/4 of the pitching staff on that list. As long as we have CPM it won't matter though. You could give us the NYY lineup and he would lose in Omaha

TOPS is a full tuition scholarship, but LSU has increased the cost to attend by adding fees that are not covered by TOPS. The purpose is to control the state's burden for TOPS. So Vandy is offering 100% scholarships with a market value of ~40k/yr and LSU is offering 70% scholarships worth a market value of ~5k.

More scouting reports on Pint

quote:

Riley Pint might be a legit 1.1 candidate: In the history of the current iteration of the draft, there has never been a prep right-handed pitcher that has gone first overall. If Riley Pint (St. Thomas Aquinas HS; Overland Park, KS) shows the same stuff he did last week in Long Beach, he’s got a great chance of doing just that.

“[Pint was] electric,” an NL Central scout said. “I had him at 98 mph on his first couple of pitches, and you can easily see that becoming an 80 fastball because of his arm strength. The slider was filthy at times, too with hard bite. If he can throw that pitch for a strike, he’s going to miss a ton of bats. The change was a step behind those pitches but there were a couple of nasty ones; 87-88 mph with late fade that will make left-handers look foolish that are sitting on the heater. The delivery is pretty clean, and I was impressed with his feel for pitching. He’s got a chance to be a really special arm.”

Pint will face inferior competition all season, so showing legitimate top of the rotation stuff this summer was important, and if he stays healthy, he appears to be a lock for the top half of the first round – assuming his LSU commitment doesn’t keep him in school.

This class could be absolutely disgusting. Lange, McKay/Latz and Pint for our weekend rotation in 2017.

Holy shite balls.

Pint could probably push Lange for the best pitcher on the team. There is a reason guys like him don't make it to college
